Once a secret known only to a few lucky patrons, the garden café of Numismatic Museum (12 Panepistimiou, tel. 210-36.10.067) is now a popular spot. The museum, once the residence of Heinrich Schliemann, the German businessman and archaeological pioneer, is an impressive building in the heart of Athens. Designed by Ernst Ziller and known as the Iliou Melathron, the building is complemented by an 800 m2 lush outdoor space with a variety of Greek flora. The garden, dotted with copies of ancient Greek statues, features tables bordering the flower beds. The menu includes typical café fare, including snacks and sweets.

The Numismatic Museum of Athens hosts one of the greatest collections of coins, ancient and modern, in the world. It is housed in the Iliou Melathron (the name meaning "Palace of Troy"), which was constructed in 1880 as the residence of the famous archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann who discovered the ancient Troy and the Mycenaean sites. In the inner courtyard garden of the museum there is a café where under the trees, at the heart of the city, you can enjoy coffee or snacks or a late afternoon drink.

Even though it is pricier than other places, the café of the Numismatic Museum is one of my favourites, tucked away in a quiet courtyard off busy Panepistimiou Street smack in the center of the city. Find some serenity here after a busy day of sightseeing.
