Augustus Pugin designed and built this astounding building known locally as "Pugin's Gem". Pugin's other works include the interior of the Palace of Westminster.

Designed by gothic architect Pugin, the church was commissioned by the Alton family with no expense spared. Known as Pugin’s Gem and locally as the Red Church, it features gothic red stonework, stained glass, hand painted walls and Minton floor tiles with lots of gold throughout. Part of a cluster including the church, old convent and the school.

one of Pugin's gems, a seriously ornate space.

The Grade I listed Gothic Revival church was designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. It has a spire height of 61m / 200 ft and is by far the tallest building in the town. As you walk in you can see it's one of the best preserved churches of it's kind in Britain. From the wooden roof to the alter, from the stained glass windows to the interior decoration, it's just a delight to see. You could spend all day just looking. Take a few £1 coins - you'll need them to switch the interior lights on to see the building at its best. Parking can be a problem but it's worth it.
