The WA Shipwrecks Museum is an excellent maritime archaeology museum close to the maritime museum. Hundreds of relics from ships wrecked along WA’s coastline, including the original timbers from Batavia (wrecked in 1629). There are relics from the first Dutch explorers - de Vlamingh 1696 who were the first europeans to sail up the Swan river & also gave Rottnest Island it's name (Rat's nest as they thought the quokkas were giant rats). There are are also many artefacts from other early Dutch, French & English explorers.

Fascinating history of the first Dutch shipwreck on the coast with tales of piracy and gold treasure.
