The visit to the old town of Herceg Novi, we are sure will make a great pleasure for you. Even though Herceg Novi is lot like many other coastal towns, come things make it special. Namely, it is the best fusion of history and culture, tradition and spirituality, past and modern time. It was founded by the king of Bosnia, Tvrtko I Kotromanic, and the town was initially called Sveti Stefan. The very historical data note that the town is about 6 centuries old, and of the tumultuous history of the town testify the fortresses inside the bulwarks of the Old town (Spanjola, Citadela, Forte Mare, Kanli kula), and of course numerous palaces and churches. Many culturally historical monuments and cultural edifices of modern age today, preserve the spirit of Christianity and represent a treasury of artistic and cultural wealth. For a long time the old town of Herceg Novi was the intermediate in trading connections with the neighboring states, and it was a rival to Dubrovnik. The old town is surrounded by the wall which was built from XIV to XIX century. If you intend to tour through the Old town of Herceg Novi, except the already mentioned fortress Forte Mare (XIV century), Kanli kula (XV century), we suggest that you think about the visit of the central part of the old urban core, which has two big squares in it: the Square of Herceg Stjepan with the church of Sveti Arhandjel Mihajlo and the Square Mico Pavlovic with the church of Sveta Jeronima. The town also has artistic galleries, national library, city archive etc…

Kanli kula originates from the Turkish period (16th century); it used to be a prison (which is where its original Turkish name the “Bloody Tower” comes from), and in 1966 it was reconstructed and turned into one of the most wonderful summer stages on the Adriatic coast, which has over 1000 seats, even though it can accommodate over the total of 15,00 people. On the South walls of the fortress, there is the so called “Donkey door” which was made by Austrians in the 19th century.

Forte Mare was built on a cliff in front of the city port. According to some legends, this castle represents the beginning of the medieval fortress town that was founded by the Bosnian king Tvrtko I in 1382. With the arrival of the Venetians, in the early 18th-century, fortress was reconstructed. From that time dates the current name.

On December 15th 1966, after closing of The Art School in Herceg-Novi, the Art Gallery was established under the protection of Soldier Union (from the second world war), by artists and well - intentioned citizens. The Gallery was named after Josip Bepo Benkovic, the artist from Herceg Novi, who was executed on Banjica in 1943. The Gallery became the meeting center of artistic life in Herceg Novi, where were organized individual and group presentations of Yugoslav and foreigner Artists. After the decision of Community Parliament of Herceg Novi, from 5. 4. 1967. the Gallery has been performing within the Regional Museum as an individual section. The first Herceg-Novi` winter salon was organized in 1967and was of the local character, but soon it became Yugoslav review with specialised selectors. Up to now, about 1150 artists took a part in 33 salons. To the relevant artists from Yugoslavia (ex SFR Yugoslavia and actual SR Yugoslavia) were assigned 109 awards.
