Forte Mare, which means sea fortress, stands on rocks in the old part of the flourishing town of Herceg Novi. This is part of the ancient fortifications, which in the Middle Ages, defended the city.

Forte Mare was built on a cliff in front of the city port. According to some legends, this castle represents the beginning of the medieval fortress town that was founded by the Bosnian king Tvrtko I in 1382. With the arrival of the Venetians, in the early 18th-century, fortress was reconstructed. From that time dates the current name.
