Sanderling Cornwall Terrace Penzance

Sightseeing

Penzance is an old market town granted a charter for the harbour by King Henry VIII in 1512. Mounts Bay itself has been a trading centre going back to the days of the ancient Romans. This area of West Cornwall has a history of fishing and mining; there is a working harbour at Newlyn and although no longer operating it is possible to visit the Geevor Mine on the north coast. One of the oldest streets in Penzance is Chapel Street leading down to the harbour from the town. This has many interesting buildings, including the Egyptian House, and others containing independent shops, galleries, restaurants and pubs. The main shopping street is Market Jew Street (from the Cornish language Marghas Yow meaning Thursday market). There is the domed Lloyds Bank building and statue of Humphrey Davey at the top and from where slopes down towards the railway station at the bottom. There are some of the high st stores which are to be expected in any town, but also some independent traders who are well worth a visit. Causewayhead is the other street in town and this goes north from the top of Market Jew St, this is a pedestrianised space, again with both independent and regular traders. There are some rather beautiful hidden terraces in Penzance, mostly Georgian and recommended for a stroll through ….. Regent Square, Morrab Place, North Parade, Parade Passage, mostly situated to the east of Morrab Road. Penlee House in Penlee Park, which can be accessed from Morrab Road, has a pleasant cafe, The Orangery, gift shop and a gallery. The gallery often shows paintings from the Newlyn School, the artists depicting scenes from life in the fishing communities in the late 19th and early 20th century. It also houses a small museum of local interest. The other park in Penzance is Morrab Gardens which has many sub tropical specimens and makes a very nice walk through to the town from the house.

Penzance Promenade, which has had a major refurbishment during the past year, is just 50m from the door. Go right to walk along to Newlyn, a very pleasant route at the edge of the sea and through the Bolitho gardens, where there is a skate park and a children’s playground. At the end of Newlyn Green is the Newlyn Art Gallery. You can obtain joint tickets for this Gallery which also allows entry to the Exchange Gallery in Penzance town.

Newlyn is well worth a visit for its colourful harbour, narrow streets and variety of shops, pubs and cafes. The Duke St cafe has a tasty menu and for fish lovers there is Mackerel Sky and Argo. The Tolcarne Pub specialises in fish dishes too. Newlyn is famous for its fresh fish and seafood. There is also the Newlyn Art House cinema for the latest films.

Further round the coast from Newlyn is Mousehole, pronounced “Mowzell”, a charming and traditional old fishing village. Mousehole has a small harbour and beach with its narrow winding streets rising up from the harbour. This is such a lovely place to explore with many interesting historical cottages and far reaching views across Mount’s Bay. There is the Coastguards Hotel at the entrance to the village which has stunning views and a deserved reputation for good food. Down by the harbour is the more traditional Ship Inn and the village has several cafes, galleries and craft shops to enjoy. If you like to stretch your legs it is quite possible to walk to Mousehole around 3 miles or there are regular buses if you don’t want to take your car.

If you turn left at the bottom of the terrace you can walk along the prom heading for the Jubilee Pool, an art deco open air pool dating from the 1930s. It is a good place to spend an afternoon sunning on the side of the pool, enjoying a drink or snack from the cafe and of course swimming in the deep seawater pool or in the shallow area put aside for children. The pool has very recently opened a geothermally heated area for which there are separate tickets, advice buying these in advance if you fancy a hot dip !

Walk past the pool and you see Penzance harbour, from here you can embark on a Boat trip on the Mermaid out to see seals, dolphins, numerous seabirds and the occasional whale. The boat trip is really good value and it is so lovely to see the coast line from the water as you head out to sea. The other recommended trip is on the catamaran The Marine Discovery which offers various trips out to explore Mounts Bay and the nearby coastal waters.

Heading away from Penzance to the east, again if you like to stretch your legs, it is possible to walk to Marazion along the coast path which starts behind Penzance bus station around 5 miles. Marazion itself is a lovely old town with great views of the mount. It has a large sandy beach for walking, swimming, kite surfing, canoeing etc. The town has numerous cafes to choose from, The Godolphin has a good menu and unbeatable views of the Mount. There are of course craft shops and gift shops and the famous Philps Pasty is sold here. There are quite a few different producers of cornish pasties but Philps pasties are a personal favourite.

Porthcurno, on the south coast west of Penzance. Is the archetypal pale sand beach with clear turquoise waters, blue as the mediterranean on a hot summer’s day. On the side of the cliff at Porthcurno is the renowned Minnack Theatre built by the remarkable Rowena Cade in the first half of the 20th century. It is fantastic to experience a performance sitting on the carved terraces watching the stage with the backdrop of sea and sky looking across to Logans Rock.
