Food Scene

It's right around the corner, has a very varied menu, and everything's pretty good. It's very very very popular (like lines out the door) so get there early or don't be too hungry.

Yummy yummy yummy food from a couple who used to have a high end restaurant in the neighborhood called Hatfields. Scrumptious baked goods as well as some healthier options. I particularly like the breakfast tartine with hummos, a farmers' market tomato, pesto and a fried egg.

The food here is outstanding. It's the place chefs frequent. Like Sycamore Kitchen, it's a stand in line and order your food kind of place. The line may be long but you'll be served shortly after you order. Their thick brioche toast with homemade ricotta and jam is out of this world, as well as their avocado toast with pickled carrots and zatar. This is a short drive from here... not a walk.

No atmosphere and no alcohol (but they let you bring beer or wine in for maybe $5) but delicious and healthy vegan thai food a few blocks away. Great for take-out as well.

A beautiful outside terrace restaurant at the Sunset Marquis Hotel. The food and service is quite good, and a little pricey but it's a special place. This is the hotel where all the musicians come to stay so there's memorabilia around and you have a very good chance of seeing some celebrity. It's also great to just get a drink at the bar and enjoy the garden next to the restaurant and people watch.

Right around the corner, this is a great spot to get a very good glass of wine and some nibbles and sit outside on the patio... or inside and watch the street scene on Melrose. Very reasonably priced.

Consistently good high end Mexican food but not too pricey. The atmosphere is fun and lively and it's right next to the Farmers Market in the event you're in that area. They have a great happy hour and terrific margaritas. It's always busy but you can just come in and sit at the bar and it's usually not that long a wait. I'm partial to the rajas, cucumber escabeche and the cucumber salad, but everything there is pretty good.

Very good sushi. They may still be waiting for their liquor license, but reasonably priced and unusual dishes, including several rolls without rice. A little on the fusion side.

Yes, it's a chain, but it's good pizza and some very good salads and other small plates. Order at the counter and they bring it to you. Great beer and wine by the glass, they also have a fuzzball table and it's a good place to watch a game. Very relaxed atmosphere.

Parks & Nature

I hate to let you in on the secret, but it seems that nobody in LA goes to Franklin Canyon for a hike or a walk. It's very serene, and even in the summer, there's shade if you walk on the road (on which there are barely any cars). There are miles and miles of trails and you can even walk all the way over (past Tree People) to the valley. It's also a nice place just to sit on the lawn on the bottom and bring a picnic.

Arts & Culture

LACMA has some great collections and you can walk from here. Also, the grounds are very pretty and it's adjacent to the LaBrea Tar Pits if you want to check that out too. On Friday nights in the summer, there's a free jazz and the museum is open at night and is free. Either bring a picnic or see if you can sit at the bar at the Ray and Stark Bar (or make a reservation for dinner and sit outside and listen to the jazz). Ray and Stark Bar has very very good food for a museum restaurant.

Monday mornings from 9-2. It's a 5 minute walk from here to Plummer Park at Santa Monica, and it's just at the north end of the park at Fountain. A small farmers market, but there's always a fresh fish guy and someone who sells rotiserie chicken along with all your basic essentials. Great asian vegetables from the woman at the stall that's furthest east.
