“Fado is what I breathe”, says Luís Miguel Oliveira, head of the Mal Cozinhado restaurant and fado house since 2011, but there are many more to help parents in the business. “The clientele has changed a lot”, he points out. “Before they were only Portuguese, today most are tourists. Many restaurants have opened, the clientele is also busy. There is a deficit [of Portuguese] that is missed.” In Luís' opinion, it would also be necessary “to have an education”, to try to cultivate a taste for fado in younger people. “But I have hope. This new generation of fado singers can pull in younger people.” Fado singers such as Amália Rodrigues, Carlos do Carmo, Vicente da Câmara, Dulce Pontes and Ana Moura have already passed through Mal Cozinhado (name that has existed for at least 600 years, at the time a restaurant frequented by Luís Vaz de Camões). They have a private cast in which several generations cross: Valdemar Vigário on guitar, João Moutinho on viola, Rosinda Maria and Sandra Cristina on voices, not forgetting Miguel Xavier, 22, “o benjamim”. As in other professional fado houses, here he is also heard during dinner (average price: €30). Fado restaurant. It is settled in a building from the fourteenth century, rustically decorated. Special mention goes to the bronze portraits of recognized "fado" singers.

Neste local irá encontrar uma vista maravilhosa sobre o rio Douro. O Mal Cozinhado está localizado no centro histórico da Ribeira, junto ao rio, e parte do edifício tem mais de 600 anos de existência! Alguns dos mais prestigiados fadistas portugueses passaram por lá anteriormente, incluindo a talentosa Amália. Atualmente, poderemos deliciar-nos com as melodias sentidas de Valdemar Vigário, Rosinda Maria, Sandra Cristina e João Moutinho. O menu não tem muitas opções mas, se lhe apetecer experimentar um prato tradicional português, este é o local para pedir o tão conhecido Bacalhau à Brás, por 20€. O espetáculo ocorre de segunda a sábado, a partir das 20h30.
