Up for a more challenging hike? Take the 7 miles journey to Clingmans Dome for some of the best views the GSMNP has to offer. Turn off Newfound Gap Road 0.1 mile south of Newfound Gap and follow the 7-mile-long Clingmans Dome Road to the large parking area at the end.

25 miles from the town of Cherokee, Clingman's Dome is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at6,643 feet. You have a 360 degree view of the Smokies from the parking lot, but the views are even better if you hike the steep half-mile paved walkway up to the "flying saucer" tower at the top. On clear days, you can see more than 100 miles.

Beautiful hike! It does have a very steep incline all the way up to the top (with lots of places to stop and rest if need be), but the views are worth it. There is also a bathroom and gift shop. Parking can be difficult as it gets crowded! We recommend going either early or later. It is a winding road on the way up there.

Steep trail about 1.5 hours from here. It is all paved, but steep up to observation tower from which you can view the most beautiful sunrise.
