The Sarajevo Cathedral in the very center of Sarajevo is only a couple of minutes away from the main mosque of Sarajevo. Located on the same walking street, but just outside the Old Town, when the tourists transition from the Ottoman architecture to the Austro-Hungarian time, making it a unique blend of the East and West.

The Cathedral of Jesus’ Sacred Heart was built in 1889 in the Neo-Gothic style and is the seat of the Archdiocese of Vrhbosna. Josip Vancaš, a Hungarian architect, took his inspiration for the design of Sarajevo’s cathedral from the Notre Dame Cathedral in Dijon, France and St. Teyn Cathedral in Prague. Thanks to Vancaš’ great talent, Sarajevo’s cathedral ended up becoming an entirely new and authentic building, and also fits in beautifully with its surroundings, with Gazi Husrev Bey’s Hamam (Turkish bath) in the background.

One of the mandatory stops if you came to see the "Europe's Jerusalem" as Sarajevo is often called. The cathedral is built in the Neo-Gothic style, with Romanesque Revival elements. The building was designed by Josip Vancaš that modeled it after the Notre-Dame in Dijon (France). In front you can see the statue of Pope John II that is a very loved throughout the city because of help and morale support he provided for all Bosnians after the war.

In its style the cathedral belongs to early Gothic (13th century) with a minimal facade decoration. It was under construction from 1884 until 1889. A significant spatial value is possessed by the square of fra Grga Martić in front of the cathedral ,since it is the only proper European square in Sarajevo.
