Fort George is the only ancient monument in Scotland still functioning as intended – a working army barracks - but still welcoming visitors. A gift shop and café (seasonal) are among the attractions.

Following the 1746 defeat at Culloden of Bonnie Prince Charlie, George II created the ultimate defence against further Jacobite unrest. The result, Fort George, is the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain, if not Europe. A real must for the military fans.

The imposing fort was designed by Lieutenant-General William Skinner and built by the Adam family of architects. Fort George took 22 years to complete, by which time the Jacobite threat had subsided. But it has served the British Army for the almost 250 years since.

One of the largest and most impressive artillery fortifications in Britain. Built in the 18th Century following the battle of Culloden. A great place to learn more about the military history of the area and take in the amazing views from the ramparts out across the Moray firth.

“Rocpool restaurant is my very favourite place to eat at lunch and dinner. It changes it’s menu every 6 weeks or so, so it’s never repetitive. The food, staff and ambience is always 5 stars but you must book well in advance.”

“If you are heading north on the A9, perhaps to Tain, Dornoch or Dunrobin, do pop into The Storehouse just to the south of Evanton (27 miles from Drumnadrochit) off the A9, taking great care crossing the A9 if heading north. An excellent café as well an opportunity to shop for boutique Scottish produce. ”
