Following the 1746 defeat at Culloden, George II created the ultimate defence against further Jacobite attack. The result, Fort George, the mightiest artillery fortification in the UK, if not Europe.
Fort George is the only ancient monument in Scotland still functioning as intended – a working army barracks - but still welcoming visitors. A gift shop and café (seasonal) are among the attractions.

This is still operating as a military barracks. Inside is a museum- lots of history, local regiment and otherwise.
