Food Scene

Sure, it's casual dining, but the burritos, tacos and sides are a local favorite. Situated in an unassuming strip mall, Michaels provides great Mexican food at good prices, either to-go (Burrito at the beach, anyone?) or in their clean, but spartan dine-in area.

Winner of the Cioppino Throw-down with Bobby Flay, this world-famous seafood and fish market has an extensive menu of local and regional seafood specialties. It's popular and crowded and parking is a challenge, but the dockside location and the cuisine are worth the effort. It's only about 15 minutes by car.

This locals favorite is a good jumping off point for 17-mile Drive, Lover's Point or a stroll through the Victorian downtown Pacific Grove. Their coffee is the best on the Peninsula and there's something about that Morning Glory Muffin you just can't deny.

Entertainment & Activities

This is the obvious choice and on everyone's must-see list for the Monterey Peninsula. I'm sure you've heard of what the locals simply refer to as "The Aquarium" but here's some insider tips: - If you can arrive to the area earlier on Friday, the Aquarium is less busy on a Friday afternoon than any time during the weekend. The school groups will be heading out, while other visitors are planning to come on Saturday or Sunday. You'll have a better experience when the Aquarium is not so crowded. - Park in the structure between Wave and Foam Streets, just a few blocks from the Aquarium. This multi-level parking garage charges the same or lower rates than street parking and there's always room.

Parks & Nature

It's where the locals go to escape the fog and sea breeze. The park is deceptively large, encompassing miles and miles of trails. You can either stick the valley floor for a leisurely stroll or you can challenge yourself on Snively's Ridge up to the meadow. The truly adventurous will go all the way to the top, where there are views from Big Sur to Carmel and out to the Pacific Ocean. There are waterfalls and amazing views all along the way. Afterwards, drop into Carmel Valley Village for a snack or some wine tasting. You earned it.

Newly minted, Ft. Ord National Monument is one of the newest parks in the National Park System. It encompasses an area equal to the city and county of San Francisco! The mix of paved paths and hidden trails link you to amazing coastal oak forests, chaparral and, in spring and early summer, ephemeral ponds and stunning wildflowers. "Ft. Ord" as the locals still refer to it, offers a glimpse into what the Central California Coast might have been centuries ago. Bring water, as it's wild out there - not much as far as guest services go...but that's why you'll love it.

Shopping

Chronically charming, Carmel-by-the-Sea is a wonderland for the window shopper. There's everything from Tiffany's to t-shirts. Boasting more art galleries per capita than anywhere in the world, it's also a great place to get a feel for the local art scene. It's also an excellent place to find a glass of wine or a meal. Don't miss the Tuck Box and the House of Sweets, two small English-country house-inspired charmers, which set the architectural stage for Carmel's famous "Hobbit Houses". If you're lucky, you'll book a reservation at the Flying Fish Grill or La Bicyclette for lunch or dinner.
