Food Scene

Best sushi in Alaska - overlooks the channel and it's mesmerizing to watch the fishing boats go in and out. Selection of sushi and sashimi is extensive, as well as other traditional Japanese offerings like yakisoba, udon and dumplings. Full bar and seating for large groups. Their lunch bento boxes are economical and good, for dinner I recommend showing up before 6pm, as it can be crazy-busy until 9pm on the weekends.

As an alternative to most of the "American" food served in Kodiak, this place offers something different - flatbread pizzas, gyros, and huge burgers. I don't recommend the salads, but the aforementioned items are pretty good, as are their fresh made milkshakes, and they have wine and beer.

Locally owned and operated with a great view of the boat harbor, they have a wide selection of coffee drinks, both hot and cold, and the service is friendly and cheerful. The baked goods offered are not locally made, but the coffee is locally roasted, and pretty darn good. Try the Harborside Mocha if you like a spicy Mexican-style mocha, it's my favorite. They have sweatshirts and coffee mugs/thermoses to purchase and a book exchange.

while the food takes awhile to arrive, it is worth the wait. One of the best steaks in town, as well as fresh fish and barbeque. A full bar and a gorgeous view keeps you happy while you wait. Worth the drive out the road, paved all they way, it's at the only stop sign on the Chiniak-Pasagshak road, if you go straight through you're in their parking lot. An added attraction is when the bulls butt each other in the head while crossing the highway. They close at 9, and are only open Wednesdays-Sundays from May-October, call ahead if you're more than 2 people and want a table. Very popular summer spot.

Drinks & Nightlife

Decent cocktails, smoke-free, with a view of the Mall, where the locals can be seen wandering around. Friendly service and typical American food, it's the go-to spot for basic booze. No longer do they have music, but plenty of TVs adorn the walls along with local artwork, so you can watch the "game".

Known as the "biggest navigational hazard in Kodiak", this old fishermen's bar is worth a look-see, but because smoking is still allowed, and the pool tables seem to be the biggest attraction, unless you're meeting friends here, it may not have much going on. Occasionally, during holidays and events in Kodiak, bands may be playing, but that's the exception.

Shopping

this place has an extremely wide assortment of gear for the hunter, fisherman or general shopper. Their selection of books for all ages, T-shirts and rubber boots, not to mention pumps, raingear and supplies surpasses most other stores. Worth a look-see even if you have none of this stuff on your shopping list, they serve coffee and cookies to tide you over.

a wide assortment of vitamins, vegetables and fruits and within walking distance to the apartment. They offer a juice bar, as well as organic food and cookware. Rather pricey, but they owned locally, and try hard to serve the health-conscious shopper in Kodiak.

The offerings of fabric, yarn and patterns are enormous in this little downtown store. Chris can help you find just what you need for that next needlework project, and you'll find fabric here that is not found elsewhere in town.

Beautiful beaches and gorgeous views. There are a few hiking trails, but the fishing for red salmon is fantastic in June and July. There are picnic shelters and a wide sandy beach.

This gorgeous recreational site offers a look at the treeless side of Kodiak Island. Paved all the way out here, and beyond (to the Rocket Launch facility) , the river hosts many red salmon in a good year, and the beaches are quite sandy. Access is limited but it's a great drive and you'll see all kinds of wild life, buffalo, eagles and more.

Sightseeing

a drive or hike up the Pillar Mountain Road will take you to the six windmills that help provide 90% of the electricity to this small town. A fantastic view awaits! 360 degree of gorgeous views, that still take the local by surprise. Be careful if you drive up, the road is rather bumpy and not well-maintained
