In 1735, William Horton was granted Jekyll Island by the trustees of the colony of Georgia. Following a Spanish attack that destroyed his first house on the island, Horton rebuilt the home that still stands today with the help of indentured servants in 1743.
Horton distinguished himself through his leadership in the fledgling colony. As one of Gen. Oglethorpe’s top military aides, Horton was in charge of troops garrisoned at Fort Frederica on nearby St. Simons Island.
Horton “found the land exceeding rich” on his Jekyll Island property, and grew a variety of crops to supply the nearby Frederica Settlement. Horton also brewed Georgia’s first beer at his plantation on Jekyll Island. The site also includes the cemetery of the DuBignon Family, which owned Jekyll from 1790 to 1886 and occupied the house as their home from 1790 until sometime in the mid-1800s. The Horton House is one of the oldest tabby buildings in Georgia, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Credit Jekyll Island

A great place to look for sharks teeth. Look for small Black T's. We like to go as the tide is going out and look at the edge of the water. Just past Summer Waves you will see a gate. Park on the side of the road. The beach is about .8 of a mile walk down the trail. Take water and bug spray. There are no facilities.

Typical of the early club cottages, its rustic appearance is a reflection of the casual lifestyle of the original club members, who sought to escape from the pressures of the city to hunt, fish, and enjoy the natural beauty of the coastal environment. Downstairs are an entrance hall, a game room with wood shingle walls, a parlor, a dining room and servant’s area with butler’s pantry and kitchen. Upstairs are five family bedrooms, two full baths, one-half bath, and a servant’s room. The attic floor contains seven rooms, probably used as servants’ quarters, storage, and one bathroom. The cottage, like many built during the Club Era, also has a basement. Originally, a solarium was located on the south side of the cottage. Credit Jekyll Island

Parking Passes and Entry
As you make your way onto Jekyll Island, you will find a variety of experiences to enjoy including, beach access, our historic landmark district, the Clam Creek fishing pier, miles of bicycle trails, and more. As a state park, all vehicles entering Jekyll Island are required to have a valid parking pass.
$8 dollars per day $12 for vehicles over 12 ft Good till midnight of the day of purchase. $75 per year
