Food Scene

It's walking distance from the house and run by an amazing local grandma! Try the "salad chicken" and "tororo-isobe-yaki." The tempura, if they have it that day, is awesome (just ask for it).

Very popular. Nice crispy skins on the outside, juicy on the inside! The filling could be better, but overall if you are looking for gyoza in Hakone, this is the place to go. Near Chokoku-no-mori.

Good homemade soba. Good tempura. Good everything. A long walk from Hakoneyumoto station but its beautiful along the river and the location keeps the crowds down somewhat (there may still be a wait).

Perhaps the most authentic Napoli style pizza in Hakone? Tired of rice? If you really want a pizza in Hakone, this is the place to go. It is a bit of a walk from the bus, but it is well worth it. Make sure you call in advance because they are often closed or fully booked. 0460-85-2884

The Bread shop just outside the Fujiya Hotel is overpriced (like everything in Hakone) but at least it is the real deal. Get all sorts of good freshly baked bread here.

Parks & Nature

This is a light 30-60 min hike great for families. Take the mountain access road (between house & Takinoya). When you hit the hiking trail you see another trail going down to the left. Follow it down.

This small park is home to a great Japanese "fishing hole" tucked away in an idyllic spot where you can rent everything you need plus a BBQ grill to cook your catch. Great fun for young children. Expect to blow at least 10,000 yen if you want to fish and BBQ with your children...but nevertheless is it a great experience and my children love to go.

This trail head is actually between my house and the Utayu Yado (or Takinoya Restaurant). As you walk UP the main road to the right towards Utayu or Takinoya, you will see a narrow gravel road leading off to the left. Enter here and after a bit you will see a gate across a narrow paved road to your left. This is an old logging road that leads up to the ridge line trail. From the ridge line trail, I usually go left. There is a great hike down to the waterfall (it is the first left going down very close to where the logging road hits the ridge line trail. Or you can keep going to a great picnic spot. This trail goes all the way down to Yumoto and is very nice (but the last downhill is brutal).

Arts & Culture

A world class art museum and outdoor sculpture collection grace the huge grounds here. Lots to do and see for all ages. You could spend the whole day here and not see it all! Not good on a rainy day!

Essentials

The only "grocery store" (of the Western type) in the Hakone area. Everywhere else you have to go to the "specialist," aka the butcher, fish monger, tofu monger, vegetable store, etc... This can be accessed via bus in about an hour or 20 min by car.

This place supplies fish to many hotels in Hakone and has great stuff. We get fish for sashimi all the time. They prepare it for you if you ask (Aji no tataki is great!) Scallops (hotate)! Maguro! Easy to shop here as all you do is point at what you want! Usually great selection. Closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Small family run vegetable shop. Not much selection. Sometimes closed, sometimes open late...Hard to tell! The 7/11 on the way to Gora may be the only place to get veggies nearby if this place is closed.
