If you’re stunned by Shanghai today, go to see how it will look in 2020. The Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall is a short walk across Renmin Square from the magnificent Shanghai Museum, and is well worth a visit, far more interesting than its name suggests. The centerpiece is an enormous scale model of the city centre that takes up an entire upper floor. It shows current and future development, and it’s mind-boggling. There are raised walkways for viewing the model from different angles, and the detail is fascinating, showing clearly what’s planned, and what already exists. It’s also a very good introduction to Shanghai, and gives visitors an excellent perspective and introduction

East Nanjing Road is a dedicated commercial zone. At its eastern end is the central section of the Bund, featuring the Peace Hotel. Immediately west of the Bund precinct was traditionally the hub of European-style restaurants and cafes, although in recent years these have become less of a feature as the demographics of visitors to Nanjing Road have shifted from affluent local residents to visitors from around the country. Jing'an Temple is one of the most famous temples in Shanghai which is located at West Nanjing Road, the flourishing downtown area of Shanghai. In 1983, it was put on the list of key national protection. The temple has a history of more than 780 years. First built in the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280), it was named Hudu Chongyuan Temple. In the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), it was moved to the present location from the bank of Wusong River and became a busy and crowded place until 1908; the first tramcar was built as Jing'an Temple for its starting station. Later, a famous calligrapher renamed it as Jing'an Temple in 1945 and is still named as such today.

The word to describe the Natural History Museum is ‘comprehensive’, and you’re advised by the museum to put aside at least four hours of your day in order to absorb everything. There's a 4D movie theatre, an outdoor exhibit garden, and numerous exhibit spaces taking you right through from the Big Bang to a lifelike recreation of a busy African savannah to scale models of early Chinese agricultural communities. The stunning ‘bioclimatic’ building was designed by internationally renowned architecture practice Perkins + Will, with an ‘intelligent building skin’ to maximise daylight. Its four external walls emulate natural elements – including a vertical garden on the east wall.

Food Scene

The latest concept from Willy Trullas Moreno, Tomatito is a casual, colorful and quirky Spanish tapas bar. The menu comprises mostly Spanish classics, like pork and chicken croquetas, patatas bravas, tortillas and albondigas all done with Willy's personal touch, of course. Other offerings skew more toward Latin America with Peruvian ceviches and tiraditos.

World's Largest Starbucks he Starbucks Reserve Roastery hosts a main bar, a “pairing bar” (for coffee and food), a 27-meter long bar for their “Cold Brew Towers”, Princi, an acclaimed artisanal bakery making its debut in Asia on the site, a “coffee library”, tasting rooms, a retail clothing area, and more. Sumerian is a Shanghai institution known for its quality coffee. This casual and welcoming spot on Shaanxi Bei Lu, complete with adorable dogs Burrito and Doudou, has always held a special spot in our hearts. Winner of the best café in our Best of Shanghai Awards 2014, and also securing a spot in our roundup of Shanghai's Best Breakfasts earlier this year, our love for their offerings has not been kept quiet.

Daliah -- Slides aren’t something you’d normally associate with a restaurant. Nor are swings. But while these pieces of apparatus seem more at home in a playground than in a dining establishment, they somehow work in creative new Austrian restaurant, Daliah, a venue that openly celebrates ‘food and weirdness’. The idea is to create a playful atmosphere, one where diners can share dishes in a relaxed setting – the menu even states that dishes are specifically made in portions that enable customers to try multiple items, with at least two being the recommended number per person.

Gong De Lin is a classic on the Shanghai food scene and one of the city's most famous vegetarian restaurants. Gong De Lin serves Chinese vegetarian food, so don't be surprised (or concerned) to find meat sounding words like 'chicken' on the menu – they're all substitutes. This restaurant is also suitable for vegans.
