Lovely Italian restaurant, serviing Italian and Mediterranean full meals. Good wine menu. Our favourite, arguably the favourite of all local people. and a little more adventurous and tasty, possibly even healthier, than other eateries around. You can get a pizza to take away, although to sit down in their congenial eating rooms is a treat. Log fire.

Sightseeing

There are many castles, gardens and places of interest to visit near Glasshouses and there are leaflets for each of them in the cottage. I have listed a few of the most famous sights below.
In the mid-seventh century, St Wilfrid, built a stone basilica with a crypt, so bringing to the kingdom of Northumbria a style of building that he had seen in Rome. The church above-ground has been rebuilt more than once on a grander plan than Wilfrid’s, but his crypt survives intact and has been a very special place for more than 1300 years. It is a national treasure and makes Ripon unique since it is the oldest structure of any English cathedral. It is the smallest cathedral in Engliand, and nevertheless has magnificent proportions stone and wood carvings. Choir stalls carved Ripon is famed for its misericords, dating from between c.1489 and 1494. Remarkably, despite the severe damage of the Civil War, when the medieval glass was destroyed, the misericords survived intact. Three hands can be detected in these masterpieces of the carvers’ art, and very unusually, for a period when carvers are commonly anonymous, it has been possible to determine that they were created by the workshop of the Bromflet family, known in the Ripon historical record along with other named local carvers from around this date. With characters in the dress of the time, they present moralistic scenes, mythological creatures, and some biblical and doctrinal episodes, with extraordinary vigour and power. the rabbit disappearing down the rabbit hole is found here, and is said to have inspired Lewis Carroll to write Alice in Wonderland. There is often an Alice in Wonderland display.

Old market square, narrow streets, town crier at sundown! (NB Please check times on website as they do vary seasonally). For 1000 years Ripon administered its own justice and policed its own streets. In the 13th Century the Wakeman was responsible to the Archbishop for arrangements within the town and for its security. The Wakeman could exact fines and was required to make compensation in the event of burglary during the hours of the watch. By the end of the 16th century, the overlapping jurisdictions of Archbishop, Chapter and Wakeman were no longer proving effective. Reforms were introduced in 1598 with a new, fourth, Town Book setting out duties, responsibilities and penalties. Even today, every night at 9 o’clock, all year round, the Ripon Hornblower still ‘sets the night watch’ at the four corners of the obelisk in the Market Square: a proud city tradition. Hugh Ripley was the last Ripon Wakeman and then the first Mayor of Ripon. His house still stands on the Market Square.

You will see plenty of wildlife on your way round the deer park: fallow deer, rabbits, squirrels, heron, canada and greylag geese, mallard, teal and wigeon, pheasants, woodpeckers and, if you are very lucky, a kingfisher as it flashes past. The park walk takes you round the castle’s large ornamental lake, across the waterfall and into the deer park itself.

Our local Treetop Trek is just outside Ripon, 30 minutes drive from the cottage. Tremendous fun for 8-15 yr olds. There's a warm cafe for parents if you don't fancy legging it up in heights. Check their website.

Fabulous place for older children; also it has rides for little ones. The play barn consists of a huge barn with ropes to swing on, tunnels, slides etc. Fabulous fun. The diner serves all American burgers , ice cream and that kind of thing. Some veggie options. Kids love it - eating and playing. Boook on their website.
