Great pub within about 20 minute walk across fields from the cottage. Good food in a proper local pub. Garden at the front is generally lively with locals, the back garden is on the river and surrounded by fields so you might get an audience of sheep while you eat! Beautiful spot for a sunset.

Something of an institution in the Old Town, this wine bar does good food and great music. It has a strong local following so it gets pretty busy but absolutely worthwhile when you can hear the likes of Leanne Carrol (Ronnie Scotts) and Roger Carey.

Go to the Jerwood not for the art but for its close proximity to the Hastings Old Town Fishermans beach where you can buy fresh lobster and crab to take home or sit on the beach with the best fish and chips from Maggie's. (The Jerwood also sometimes has OK art exhibitions!)
