Food scene

There are so many amazing food experiences for you to enjoy while on your visit. Take a look at the few I have added that is within a 30-minute drive of Stay First on Last. Belly's Bar and Grill, Mackey's Pub and the Lucas Hotel are worth a mention and are found on the main street, Gilbert Street. The Thai Imperial is a 15-minute walk and can be found at Bell's Parade. Sa-wa-dee Thai van on the corner of William and Gilbert St is a delicious option too - try their spring rolls!
Amazing and delectable treats await you at House of Anvers. Check out the tasting centre, cafe, and museum. The surrounding gardens are worth some time wandering about while enjoying an ice-cream. The House of Anvers is a 5-minute drive from the house and you can find it at 9025 Bass Hwy, Latrobe. I highly recommend the chilli hot chocolate - a sweet drink leaving a tingle on the tongue!

Enjoy a cider or juice tasting. The cellar door is open daily. From the tasting room, you can view the factory and on production days see the finished product being bottled up. If you’re lucky you might catch the Cidermaker at work and learn a little more about the styles of cider and methods that they use. Takeaway packs are recommended to enjoy the drinks long after your visit or to take to your next visiting destination or for your return to home. A 10-minute drive from the house.

This is such a beautiful town to explore. Deloraine is known as a creative hub. It also hosts Rotary's Deloraine Craft Fair, 4-7 November 2022 which is the largest working craft fair in the Southern Hemisphere. Go to the website to check out ticket pricing and to download the program. If you're visiting Deloraine at another time I suggest you park the car at the top end of town and wander down and up the main street. I like to shop here, grab some lunch and head down to the weir or find a shady spot anywhere along the Meander River.

Park at the lighthouse, take in the views and then take a walk down along the Bluff beach and along Victoria Parade. There are elegant and quaint homes to look at as you walk along the track that leads into the city of Devonport. At the height of summer, you can watch the Spirit of Tasmania sail out of the Mersey River to the Bass Strait, around 8:30 pm. Check out its travel times for an accurate time.

The drive to Wynyard will take about an hour from the house and it is a scenic drive along the breathtaking northwest coastline. There are terrific cafes in Wynyard. There is one in particular called The Vault which was an old bank, sensitively restored and now a retro cafe. If you do visit The Vault...just go see the toilet! If you're into op-shopping, there are many op shops open on Saturdays. From the 24th September to late October, head up to Table Cape Tulip Farm to walk the paddocks of rainbows. Go to the website to see what is growing and what you can buy. Cut flowers and bulbs are available for purchase. I head up to the farm every year to fill my house with these amazing flowers.

Sightseeing

Jogger, fast walker or saunterer, one can really appreciate the wide walking track, with plenty of space to be shared with cyclists as you follow along the idyllic Mersey River. Any time of the day is a good time to walk it but my preference is late afternoon as the sun sets on the rippling water. You may like to check when the tide is in to see a full river viewing over mud flats.

If you're visiting Latrobe in April, take 20 minutes to walk around Dooley's Hill walking track to spot a range of fungi. The start of the track is on the corner of Last and William Streets. Please don't pick at or eat the fungi - these species are not for human consumption. The fungi are enjoyed by many budding photographers and fungi spotters alike.

Just go and see it! There are several walking tracks to explore this majestic place. Go the website for more details. It's highly likely you will see a wombat and echidna. Take layers of clothing with you as the weather can change very quickly in the alpine region. In the autumn, make the tip just to see the unique Fagus. Fagus is Tasmania’s only winter deciduous species, and one of only a handful of deciduous species in Australia. The colours reach a peak around Anzac Day (April 25) and typically will continue to stay vibrant for around a month.

If you're heading to the town of Sheffiled, you are a stone's throw away from Mount Roland. The walk takes in the plains and plateau leading to the summit of the peak and there is one recommended track to walk. The track starts at Gowrie Park Village on O'Neill's Road off the C136. Walking time takes from four to six hours return. This is the easiest track to walk to the summit as it has a moderate incline. The summit provides spectacular 360 degree views to Bass Strait, Cradle Mountain and Barn Bluff.
