Simona & Andi’s guide to Amsterdam Oost and Diemen

Sightseeing

Within a 10-15min walk or a 5min bike ride, you can visit the Diemerbos (which translated literally means the Diemen forest). The forest is an important part of the nature reserve "Gaasp en Diem" and is a young forest. The trees were planted in an open polder with plenty of water in the early 1990s. But during the excavation work for the forest, old tree trunks were found in the peat soil because there was also a forest long ago. There's a really nice and large playground with wooden installations for kids, and a brewery and restaurant, with a large terrace, at the entrance into the forest, too.

The Muiderslot is one of Holland’s most picturesque medieval castles. With a long and rich history, the castle is now a national museum and open for the public to explore its awe-inspiring rooms (restored to how they looked in the 17th century), as well as its collection of arms and armour. Amsterdam castle Muiderslot has been a national museum since 1878, when it became one of the first national museums in the Netherlands. The castle was renovated thoroughly by the architect Pierre Cuypers, the same who worked on the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Central Station.

Food scene

Within a 10-15min walk or 5min bike ride, you can reach the House of Bird, a beer brewery, restaurant, with a large terrace, at the entrance to the Diemen forest. Bird Brewery beers are never outlandish but all tasty and well-made, this fits perfectly with the House of Bird. It attracts different people: from people heading into or out of the park, families with children and tourists who enjoy beer. Even if you did not come for the beer there are plenty of other nice things to drink and eat. When you sit down you can scan a QR code and the menu will pop up on your phone, and you can order online and pay for it immediately. There are homemade ice teas and lemonade for example that are worth a try if you want something else than beer. The food is equally interesting and diverse. There is everything from salads to burgers to pizzas. Our table was filled with fries, salmon flammkuchen, grilled vegetables, and vegan blueberry pie. Something for everyone. And all of this in or around a beautiful, mostly wooden structure that fits perfectly in the woods. The House of Bird and the surrounding land is worth a family trip. For the kids there is enough to do around the restaurants and for them there is enough to eat and drink.

Neighborhoods

Diemen is a town and municipality with a population of 29,196 in the province of North Holland, Netherlands. It is located approximately 6 kilometres southeast of Amsterdam's city centre, within the Amsterdam metropolitan area. Peaceful and quiet, typical Dutch residential area, away from the busy centre but close enough to daily explore the city. Diemen is an interesting place, as it's situated within the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area but has a separate municipality title. The town is part of the urban area of Amsterdam and is situated between Amsterdam-Oost (IJburg, Watergraafsmeer), Ouder-Amstel (Duivendrecht), Amsterdam-Zuidoost (Bijlmer, Driemond), and Muiden. Green space, many playgrounds, and sport fields just a few steps away.

In the past few years this rather uninspiring part of Amsterdam saw an explosion of hip bars, restaurants, and small speciality shops. To say that Amsterdam Oost is up and coming would be an understatement, this now very popular neighbourhood has past that, and it was long overdue, as the area is close to central Amsterdam, offers some excellent architecture, and is wonderfully green. Along with its spacious streets lined by 19th-century buildings and lush green areas, Amsterdam East (Oost) is also known for its bustling markets, vibrant cultural offerings and impeccable food scene. Before exploring the hip brewery bars and trendy wine spots, you'll find plenty of opportunities for shopping, catching an art-house film, museum-hopping or simply lounging in the beautiful Oosterpark. The older streets around Oosterpark and the side streets off the Amstel river are especially lovely. The same can be said about the recently developed Oostpoort, a pleasant shopping district with comfortable apartments and townhomes overlooking the Ringvaart canal. Oost’s diversity means that housing comes in all shapes and sizes. Prices differ, too, and are much lower than in neighbouring Plantage, for instance. But don’t expect huge bargains, as the entire area is popular with families, young professionals, students, and...well, everybody else.
