This nearby trail (1 mile) to the Peninsula Point Lighthouse is short but worthwhile. The trail ends at the Lighthouse at the tip of the Stonington Peninsula, a place known for the yearly landing of the migrating Monarch Butterflies. There are signs on the way describing the unique features of the point including 400 million year old fossils. Trailhead is 10 min from the house by car: Go south on County Rd. 513 for 10 miles. Trail begins at the RV parking lot.

Presque Isle park in Marquette offers a 323-acre forested peninsula. The park supports over 100 species of native plants and diverse landscapes including pebble beaches, rocky cliffs, bogs, and forest. There are picnic areas, concession facilities, hiking trails, fishing and playground.

You can choose to walk a section of this historic 40 mile trail that parallels the Whitefish River, starting from 1/2 to 2 miles east of the river. The trail follows the approximate location of an ancient Chippewa Indian portage route used to carry canoes and supplies between Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. Following the river bluff for a considerable distance, it offers the hiker many extended views to the west across the Whitefish River Valley.

Our favorite hikes are Miners Castle to Miners Beach (2 miles) and Mosquito Falls/Chapel Falls (4-10 miles). All trailheads are near Munising, a 50 min. drive but worth the day trip!

On the way there you can find many smaller inland lakes, just off the road like Swan Lake and Council Lake, which are worth a visit. There are also various water falls near Munising.
