The Lombok district is within walking distance of the new Central Station and is the multicultural heart of Utrecht. The Kanaalstraat and its side streets are filled with stores full of exotic specialties, bric-a-brac and delicacies, and have been popular with many Utrechters for years.
Exotic shopping
The colorful Kanaalstraat is the central shopping street full of exotic supermarkets, greengrocers, butchers and bakers. You can go here seven days a week for daily shopping, but also for special products from all corners of the world. From international cheeses, breads and vegetables to tropical fruits, Arabic foods and hand-painted pottery from North Africa. Whatever ingredient you need, you're sure to find it in Lombok.
From coffee bars to living room cafes
Every day residents from all over the city come to this vibrant part of Utrecht for the cheap stores and specialty stores, but Lombok is also increasingly adorned with hip coffee shops, restaurants and living room cafes.
Do as the locals do and plop down on the easy chairs during a day of shopping and order a cake at coffee shops like Zwart Goud or Koffie en ik. Reserve a table at the hip Asian restaurant Jasmijn en ik for small, special dishes. Or opt for the daily snack at Café Lombok, whose menu is inspired by the neighborhood and its residents. Of course you can also cook yourself: on the Kanaalstraat you will find all the ingredients for a special dinner.
Sights in
Lombok is originally a multicultural working class neighborhood, with buildings from the early 20th century. The district is characterized by its narrow streets and small, but cozy workers' houses. Important sights of the district are the new mosque at the beginning of the Kanaalstraat, the sawmill De Ster, the refurbished Cereolfactory and the Merwedekanaal. This canal was dug out by hand, and shows Utrecht's industrial past.
Accessibility
Lombok is at walking distance from the Central Station. To get there you have to take the exit of the Beatrixtheater at the station and walk to the left in the direction of the mosque. Cross the street and you are in Lombok!
