Food scene

This is the most fabulous restaurant - just a few minutes drive away - in a converted dyehouse. Amazing decor - think House of Hackney, vintage furniture and the most amazing setting along the river! Italian food at it's best - this is such a cosmopolitan place to eat (and if the weather is good they have the most amazing outdoor seating area). I highly recommend visiting Devour - you MUST book ahead - currently they are open Wednesday to Sunday. And if you do go (and you must!) make sure to have Gelato for pudding - divine!

This is a great and fun cafe - wholesome food (fish finger sandwiches!), delicious cakes, and when you are here, you have to have a cup of tea! There are vintage cars on show, lots of bicycles too, making it a really quirky place to visit - Jane Macdonald visited for her recent tv programme and loved it!

Another lovely local pub, in such a gorgeous setting, right in the heart of Hepworth. This is about 20 minutes walk from the cottage - perfect place to have a little stop off for a refreshment. Also good for evening or Sunday meal - we usually book, but you don't need to be pre-booking weeks ahead.

Great country pub serving good food too! It’s quite a walk from the cottage but a lovely walk and means you’ve built up an appetite! From the cottage walk into New Mill, up Sude Hill to the church, take the left fork, then follow the road all the way through Fulstone and Stocksmoor. Past Stocksmoor train station and then turn right at the t junction. Walk down the hill and over the bridge and you will see The Woodman on the right.

A short drive away is Penistone Paramount -like stepping back in time - there is an interval, ice cream trolley arrives, the bar opens for drinks and refreshments, popcorn also on sale at the kiosk. Beautifully kept, smart red velvet seating and very well supported- book your tickets online before you go. I went to see Wonka here at Christmas at an afternoon showing - it was a sell out showing. Walks and Pubs

A great pub for a drink, hot sandwich (they have a sandwich shop to the side of the pub) or a traditional pub meal - especially if you've just done a circular walk from Holme village around Blackpool Bridge! If you are looking for circular walks from Holme, use the search criteria - circular walk Blackpool Bridge from Holme village and various lengths of walk come up. We do this every Boxing Day !

This is a great 2.5 circular walk from the centre of Holmfirth. Lots of places to eat in Holmfirth - we try to walk early and finish at Bloc Cafe for their amazing breakfast on sour dough or a French toast special (see photo!!) The walk starts in the square outside the Holy Trinity Church, off Town Gate. Head to the far left hand corner of the square, and climb the steep steps up to Beattie's Coffee Shop. Use the hand rail if needed. At the top of the steps, bear left and Go left past T'owd Towser - the building which is thought to be the oldest in the town - and head up Church Terrace. There are more steps to climb here and then a left turn at the top joins Bunkers Hill. At the top of Bunkers Hiill, turn right up the hill along Back Lane. Carry on along Back Lane, past a fig tree on the right and the Old Vicarage on the left. Continue up the hill and ignore the road going off to the right. This is now South Lane. Continue on South Lane and past the junction with New Laithe Lane on the left. Turn right down Underbank Old Road - and be careful - this is a steep drop. Look for traces of the former cobbled surface outside Joben Cottage. Continue along Underbank Old Road, then straight across the road at the cross roads and up the hill. After the lonely mill chimney, turn right down Underbank Old Road to Dunford Road. Cross Dunford Road - which is the B6106 - and take care with the traffic here, before turning left up the hill walking on the pavement for around 500 metres. Turn right down Choppards Bank Road and at the fork in the road, keep left, and continue down Choppards Bank Road. The building around 700 metres down on the left on Choppards Bank Road is Choppards Mission Room, a small hillside church originally built in 1839 as a day school. After the Mission Room, turn right down Choppards Lane at the junction with Cote Lane. The mill pond at the bottom of this steep hill is fed by the River Ribble and was originally a source of water power for Washpit Mill. Continue uphill past Washpit Mill and past Lamma Wells Farm. Continue on Lamma Wells Road and go past the junction with Cartworth Bank Road at the top of the hill and then continue onto Cartworth Road. Continue until the junction with Cemetery Road and Rotcher Road, carrying forwards on Rotcher Road. After the bend on Rotcher Road, take a left turn down some steep steps leading through to Goose Green. Continue onto New Row and past White Witch Cottage. The lane emerges onto Hollowgate, opposite Holmfirth Market.

Boxing Day walk - Holme, Brownhill Reservoir, Ramsden Reservoir and Yateholme Reservoir circular walk) This is a circular walk which is just over 3 miles, takes about 1.5 hours (depending on how much chatting, stopping and viewing you do!). We always drive to Holme village and park in the village near the pub. The pub is called The Fleece and the post code is HD9 2QG. It is free parking in the village, there is also a public loo and of course the pub. The Fleece has a little shop at the side which does hot sandwiches or you can eat inside the pub for traditional pub food (hearty food!!). There is plenty of space to sit outside the pub if you’re eating one of their hot sandwiches with your end of walk pint! Once parked up, walk back out of the village the way you came (i.e. with the Fleece on your left, walking down the hill), to just past Holme Castle where you will see a footpath signpost on the right hand side of the road. Holme Castle is a really tall turreted house (the gates say Holme Castle on) and there is also a famous house next door to it called ‘Underhill’ which is, as the name suggests, built under ground! Follow the footpath through two styles and then diagonally over the field to where the next style is. Keep on the path, winding down, and you will see a little wooden footbridge. Walk over the bridge and follow the path which winds up the hill to the left and then downhill again to a bridge which passes over Brownhill and Ramsden Reservoirs. Walk over the bridge and up to the dirt track road. Turn right onto the road/track (you will pass the Brownhill car park) and follow the track. The path wends its way along until you come to another bridge! This time over Riding Wood Reservoir. A good spot for a photo! Over the bridge and then follow the track – you will see a footpath fairly soon after you pass over the bridge, ignore than one and keep on the track until you have passed Yateholme, following the map so that you walk back through Holme Woods and Gill Hey Bridge back to Holme. Enjoy!

My Circular Pub Walk

Start at the cottage, turn right out of Sike lane walking towards Scholes - arrive at the Boot and Shoe! From there down the hill into Jackson Bridge where you’ll find the White Horse. From there cross over the bridge, and turn right walking up the hill toward Hepworth. At the top turn left into the village, in the heart of the village is the Butchers Arms. Walk through the village turning left after the school and taking a left turn to walk along the river to Jackson Bridge. Turn Right at cross road and you will see the Red Lion at the top!
