Daisy's Buns is locally made fresh baked artisan bread! The photo is of my favorite, Trifecta! It is made with local ingredients of Fly Boys Beer & Labertew Honey! Toast it & drizzle it with Labertew Honey...absolutely delicious! She also makes the most amazing Focaccia bread! Add a few fresh toppings & grill it for the best flat bread pizza you have ever made! She lives right here in Sylvan Grove. Call her to order while you are visiting. Her number is in our guest book.

The School building is on the National Register of Historic Places. The two-and-a-half-story building reflects the Prairie School style of architecture and is constructed of native limestone, a common material in this area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The school is associated with the early German Lutheran immigrants who settled in this area. The 1913 school, designed by Salina architect C.A. Smith, replaced an earlier building at the same location. The parochial school operated every year except one between 1913 and 1981. You will find many photos of the church & confirmation in Emilie's Heritage House. The Frederking family were some of the founding members! Most of the Frederking family attended school here to include the owner!

Neighborhoods

Sylvan Grove is a small prairie town. Settlement began in 1867 and the town was platted in 1887. Many of the buildings were constructed of limestone and are still in existence and use today. The main industry is farming & ranching. You will see farmland & pastures for miles! The locals are friendly & live a quiet life. Don't be surprised if you see kids riding their bikes around town until the sun goes down or playing at the park. The town whistle still blows at noon & 6pm telling folks it's time to go home for a meal. (It's not a tornado siren!) You might feel like you have stepped back in time a few decades!

The community of Wilson promotes itself as the “Czech Capital of Kansas” due to the role of Czech immigrant settlers in the early history of the town. The town holds the After Harvest Czech Festival, which takes place during the last weekend in July every year. The Kansas Pacific Railway built Wilson Station back in 1871. By 1874, Czech immigrants from Bohemia came to Wilson to work on the railroad, establishing the area as a center of Czech culture. Wilson is south of I-70 from Sylvan Grove. Visit the grocery store & you will feel that small town charm! Go to Grandma's Soda Shop for an old-fashioned ice cream soda!

Our church congregation was founded in 1876. The current building was built in 1892. The last big renovation was in 1958 with the addition of Sunday School rooms and enlarging the sanctuary. They hold services Sunday morning at 11:00am. From my back yard in the morning, I can see the church steeple in the sunrise...one reason I love this little town!

Recreation/Sporting

I'm not a mountain biker but my son is! He has done this trail many times & sent me this online description! "This is the only Epic trail between the steamy Ozarks and the majestic Rockies, the frigid North Dakota Badlands and the blistering desert of Big Bend on the Rio Grande. Switchgrass is smack dab in the middle of Kansas, on the shores of the States most beautiful lake! With almost 25 miles in well-groomed stacked loops and lots of options for shorter rides, there is something for every level of rider." Wilson State Park - Hell Creek user area, which is south and west of the Hell Creek Bridge on South Shore Drive. You'll need to display a Kansas State Park vehicle permit available at the park entrance. Other notes...Trail access is 24/7/365. Park vehicles at the Switchgrass lot. Trailhead kiosk/register is there with trail info. Current trail conditions, maps, etc. are at facebook.com/switchgrasstrail

Sylvan Grove is a small town. There is a convenience store for basics but I suggest grocery shopping before you arrive. We do provide coffee, tea & a few snacks.

Small town...local restaurants

Fly Boys is a great restaurant! There is also a town cafe. However, if you arrive late at night & the kids are starving, you won't find a fast-food restaurant. There aren't any chain restaurants in the area. Visit the local towns for a taste of the area...they all have their own cafes!
