Sightseeing

In the southeastern shore of the Gulf of Laconia, 115 kilometers from the prefectural capital of Sparti, is the seaside town of Neapoli. It stretches along the bay at the foot of the furthest outreaches of Mt. Parnon that form the peninsula of Epidaurus Limira, culminating in Cape Maleas. While its maritime tradition is still much in evidence, Neapoli has also grown to become a popular holiday destination with its clean beaches, a variety of cafes and bars and restaurants specializing in seafood, including the local speciality, grilled octopus. Spread out around the surrounding mountainsides, with spectacular views of the sea, are villages that have retained much of their original character. Hydrofoils and passenger ferries connect Neapoli with the island of Kythera and nearby Elafonisos. Neapoli also has port facilities for visiting yachts.

Off the coast of Laconia, it is lashed by unpredictable winds and frequent storms that swallowed ships or dashed them on the rocks. The 15-metre stone lighthouse built in 1883 to cast its life-saving light at a distance of up to 40 nautical miles, was beautifully restored a few years ago and stands today as a landmark for trekkers taking on the 8.5k trail from the lovely village of Velanidia.

Monemvasia’s fortress is home to around 10 families, Greek and foreign, who live here permanently; many more are daily commuters, who run guesthouses, taverns, bars and tourist shops inside the walls. You’ll find all these easily on the main street where medieval taverns and cellars once kept prized stocks of Malvazia: Monemvasia’s famous local wine. Strict restoration guidelines have kept the fortified town in excellent condition, strangely perched on a giant rock joined to the rest of the Peloponnese by a causeway. Wander through the Lower City on lanes spanned by arches and vaulted structures where supplies are still transported by horses; ascent along the fortified street leading to the ruined Upper Town; the Byzantine churches; once-grand houses; Venetian coats-of-arms; and the Ottoman mosque – all take you back in time.

The petrified forest is included in the Aegean Geological Monument Atlas and justly claims its place in Europe’s Geopark Network. The findings are unique in Europe and of major scientific interest as the result of an original limestone petrification. The research program and restoration work at the site have revealed palm trees and fauna typical of shallow waters.

Best known for Simos beach, with golden sand dunes, tamarisk trees and bountiful fish, Elafonisos was, until 2,000 years ago, a peninsula and home to a breed of small red deer (“elafi” in Greek). A mighty earthquake, however, broke it off from the Peloponnese and turned it into the region’s only inhabited island. Elafonisos is a place of outstanding natural beauty, protected under the Natura 2000 network, and a paradise for water-sports enthusiasts. Just off the coast lies the sunken city of Pavlopetri dating to the 3rd millennium BC, which some say inspired the Atlantis myth.

Neapoli Nautical Museum For centuries, Greece has cultivated and maintained a privileged relationship with the sea, which meant to influence decisively its history. In Neapoli, maritime tradition was born under the shadow of a true legend, cape Maleas. The nautical museum is a modern exhibitions’ gallery that undertakes a very important role; to pay tribute to all those who formed this region’ s destiny fighting against the waves. Or, to narrate one more marine story with many protagonists; with simplicity and truth, the only way the people of the sea know how.
