Hyper U sells just about anything you could need. Their petrol/diesel is good value too with a 24 hour card option on their pumps. Slightly more expensive than the alternatives of Lidl or Aldi.

Cheap and cheerful. The streets are a bit windy as this is situated in the old part of town and it's easy to lose the signs. Use a satnav if you have one or take a map.

Sightseeing

Fontenay is a beautiful medieval city with cathedral, shops, ancient historic streets and churches to explore and some great restaurants. The Parc Baron has stunning views over the city and a children's play area including a large area of netting in the trees for adventure climbing (known as 'Parkabout'). Friendly goats also live in enclosures in the park. The museum of Fontenay is just beside the cathedral, the Chateau de Terre Neuve is worth a visit. There is a pretty park also behind the Hotel de Ville town hall, with a water feature and lovely flowers and trees. The war memorial by the river has another children's play area, and the river bank there is a good place for a picnic on a nice day, with a view of the spire of the cathedral. Get the city tour map from the tourist information office, or there should be copies in the house, and follow the path highlighting the main historic sights of the city. A lovely day out.

Arts & Culture

Vouvant is one of the prettiest villages in France, and has much culture, the ancient tower of Melusine which you can climb (tickets from the café) for a fabulous view of the area; artists' shops- the town is often referred to as city of painters. The church is beautiful, and there are legends abounding. The battlements make a lovely walk and discovering the back streets, little restaurants (café cour du miracle, le pic vert, etc) or picnicking by the river. You can cycle to Vouvant from the house which makes a nice day trip with a lunch stop for a couple of glasses of wine en route!
