A self-respecting vegan cannot fail to visit Joia at least once in their life. Pietro Leemann's restaurant is a one-of-a-kind Michelin star in Italy with a completely vegetarian and vegan proposal where only cheeses are allowed, moreover from small producers and raw milk. Often referred to as the "temple of vegetarian cuisine", Joia has been a real pilgrimage destination for lovers of the sector for 30 years now.

One of the peculiarities of the vegan scene in Milan is the preponderant presence of delicatessens. Small and informal places, price by weight and a huge choice of vegetables, legumes and cereals. In this sense, Rosemary has been an institution on the subject for more than 10 years: the modestly sized restaurant is the oasis of completely vegetable cuisine that opens the doors to Chinatown and the salivary glands of vegans and non-vegans. The variety of dishes at the counter is impressive, and even more so is the willingness of the managers to explain them all one by one. At least ten types of cereals to which you can add dozens of side dishes, sauces, meatballs with legumes and soy derivatives, vegetable creams and much more. To finish with the desserts, a delicious assortment of cakes, pies, donuts and spoon creams that it is hard to believe has been made without any animal derivatives. At Rosmarino you can have lunch and dinner with water and tea offered by the house, or you can take advantage of the take-away service available until 11pm. And if you have forgotten something from your shopping list (organic and gluten-free, we mean) just look around. Rosemary shelves are well stocked with coffee, vegetable drinks, fair trade cereals, alternative flours and craft beers. Rosemary pantry - both the one ready to taste and the one you can assemble with your own hands - will make your mouth water!

We talked extensively about Altatto, a vegan and vegetarian bistro with a feminine touch in a recent review. An obligatory address for those looking for a completely green gastronomic experience. The tasting menus are carried out by the three chefs and owners Giulia, Cinzia and Sara who have made their dose of mess at Pietro Leemann's Joia and for some years have taken off in the world of vegetarian catering. More recently they inaugurated the bistro in the Greco area, a convivial place on the verge of pop-up - it is open only on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for dinner - with an urban design in shades of white and gray and illuminated by adjustable globules to shed light on the menu. The visual picture is completed by the essential furnishings of the metal tables to be shared with all the diners. Altatto's cuisine takes care of the rest of the senses which, as the name suggests, plays with hands, flavors, smells and textures. But it is above all the sense of surprise that is teased by the three young chefs, whose dishes speak of seasonality, rediscovered ingredients and fusion collaborations. In other words, every week at Altatto you will find something new, maybe even some fascinating stranger eating next to you, who knows. The only certain thing is the quality of vegetarian and vegan cuisine which, although sophisticated, does not resort to the tricks of the "usual" tricks of imitating omnivorous dishes but reinterprets the ingredients while respecting their naturalness.

Quality and price meet at Porta Venezia at Alhambra Risto Veg, a gastronomy open every day until one in the morning and a popular night spot for veg-lovers. The informal dinner is done net of the weight of many ethnic specialties revisited in a vegetable key. A few examples? Hummus, couscous, samosas, curry and falafel peep out from among the most classic but always delicious creams of vegetables, cereals and legumes of the Italian tradition. For a final dessert there is the brand new Alhambra Cafè, a vegan bakery and pastry coffee shop a few tens of meters from the main address. Fluffy, coconut and pistachio-based layer cakes; or from tiramisu, generously portioned but which would be taken in spoonfuls directly from the tray. Whether it's more than sweet or savory, Alhambra will satisfy all your insatiable veg cravings. Reservations are recommended for dinner.

Fairouz is the first fully vegetarian Lebanese restaurant in the Wagner area. The warm and soft atmospheres of the oriental lamps on the decorated wooden tables transport the customer into a spicy world made up of many small plates to share. And the beauty is that there is no trace of meat and fish, indeed, most of the menu can be safely considered vegan. Get hot and fragrant pita bread to dip into the hummus of chickpeas and broad beans, into the pumpkin, spinach and tomato soups, into the aubergine and yogurt creams. Or grab the mouthwatering falafel, rice-filled vine rolls or a nice vegetable kebab that will make you forget forever the carnivorous version with an inviting taste but of dubious quality. The menu is a hymn to the embarrassment of choice that continues with cous cous, unique rice dishes, Lebanese pizzas (yes, there are also those) and sweets-not-sweets to be enjoyed with a good mint tea. A nice collection of cruelty-free Middle Eastern cuisine to explore.

Not only the name but also the atmosphere make Vegamore the romantic bistro that accompanies vegan cuisine lovers from breakfast to dinner. The restaurant, born on the ashes of the former Mudra project that combined vegetable food with yoga and Indian philosophical disciplines, offers a winning mix of intimate atmosphere, cruelty-free recipes and very competitive prices. At dinner, for example, the set menu to choose from several combinations costs the beauty of 9 euros. And if you want to add a dessert, the bill even goes up to 12 euros. A deal that has nothing shady on the contrary: simple and genuine dishes made with fresh ingredients that reach heights of gluttony in particular with desserts. For a quick lunch or a low-cost dinner, Vegamore is the address in the Porta Romana area for you.

Contrada Govinda was born from the idea of Davide Longoni, who saw the possibility of opening a bakery with a peasant inn in one of the most beautiful ancient buildings in the historic center of Milan, the Casa dei Grifi, a fifteenth-century building of the Bramante school. At the entrance, the bread wall and the dessert counter, behind you, hidden like a speakeasy, welcome you to the living room and kitchen where you can have lunch and dinner. What makes the location and the identity of the inn unique comes from its history: since the 1980s the one in via Valpetrosa 5 has been a Hare Krishna cultural center, still active, with which we have established a respectful and secular coexistence, maintaining those that are the religious "bonds" linked to the ingredients to be used and served. For us, however, there are no constraints, but possibilities: of meeting, comparison and contamination between people as well as in the kitchen.
