𝗬𝗲𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲! The Marine Dynamics Shark & Whale Tours team were delighted to spot their first two Southern Right whales from the Whale Whisperer boat on Friday 27 May, just after 12:00. Cheers went up through the offices of the Great White House in Kleinbaai when skipper Dickie Chivell’s message came through: “Southern Right Whales!!!” According to marine biologist and guide on the whale watching boat, Jade Sookhoo, “it looked like a male and female pair”. The whales have been eagerly anticipated, especially by the marine research scientists and whale boat operators, with wide-spread speculation if these honourable guests to the Overstrand have arrived in our waters in the past week. While some sightings had been reported by residents who spotted the Southern Rights’ signature V-shaped spout, it was not until last Friday that the Marine Dynamics team had their first sighting from their whale watching boat. Wilfred Chivell, CEO of Marine Dynamics and Founder of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust said, “We do believe that this will be a bumper whale season. With fantastic accommodation options in and around Gansbaai and surrounds, and having the Southern Right whales on our doorstep, the Overstrand becomes the perfect winter holiday destination for local and international tourists.” This is also your chance to experience the Marine Big 5 – sharks, whales, penguins, seals and dolphins in the greater Dyer Island Area.
