City/town information

Italy is a vibrant place with much history to explore, smells and tastes to enjoy and an overall friendly, open-air atmosphere. Chianni is a lovely, sleepy, safe, quiet hill-town in North Central Tuscany that dates back to the 12th century. There are approximately 1,400 full-time residents with 6 restaurants/bars, 3 mini supermarkets, 2 bakeries, a fresh pasta shop, pharmacy, gift shop, post office, tourist info, bus stop and more. There are many sites/cities to see around Chianni and we will provide a separate Day Trip Guide for your perusal. Thursday Evening Market - Chianni centre (July - September) selling wines, cheeses, breads, oils and trinkets. Chianni Walking Tour - Mornings - July - September. By appointment only. info@ariannandfriends.com - 2 hr duration and free of charge, but tipping is appreciated. Cooking Classes and more - www.ariannandfriends.com - Options for a cooking class at a local farm, VIP cooking class and wine tour at a local winery, Private Chef at your place, In-home cooking classes, olive-oil workshop & tasting at your place, and more. Veloce Bike Rentals - www.facebook.com/velocebikerental - Located a short distance away in Livorno. booking@velocerental.com Other tidbits about travel in Italy: Tap water is safe to drink in Florence and Tuscany. Traditionally, a Trattoria is a cheaper and more basic purveyor of home-cooking. Possibly no written menu. A Ristorante is more upscale, with aproned waiters and tablecloths. There will always be a written menu and a reasonable choice of wines. An Osterie used to be old-fashioned places specializing in home-cooking, although they have recently become popular with a younger crowd. Antipasto (before the meal) - Usually cold cuts of meats, seafood and cold vegetable dishes. Il Primo - The first course usually consists of soup, risotto or pasta. Il Secondo - Usually the main meat or fish course. Dolci - Dessert or Frutta - Fruit to end the meal. Il Conto is The Bill/Check. Coperto - Restaurant Cover Charge. Servizio - Restaurant Service Charge. There is no need to tip in Italy if one or both of these charges are already on your bill. Restaurants and Cafes often charge for table service (sitting at one of their tables). If you prefer, grab and drink and snack at the bar rather than sitting down at a table to avoid this charge. It is perfectly safe to use ATM’s in Italy. I would use an official bank ATM or one at the airport, personally, but there is no need to use an exchange office or bring a bunch of Euros with you. It’s always a good idea to notify your personal bank of your travel plans before the trip so they don’t shut off your cards.

www.teatrodelsilenzio.it - Located in Lajatico, the Teatro is a natural amphitheatre located on a hill 1.5 km from town. “A panorama of unequal beauty that offers a 180-degree view of the hills of one of the most beautiful slopes of the area, that of Volterra and its crags. An eco-architecture and land art project that has not upset the natural environment in the slightest, but rather has placed it at the center of attention, to be integrated for one day a year with what is necessary for the technical production of an international level show. At the end of the show every year, with the utmost respect for the environment, everything is removed the same night and restored to its natural state, returning to be a place of silent meditation and rest of the soul.” Host to Andrea Bocelli’s famous opera festival in July & August, as well as numerous other productions. Tickets can be purchased for events online.
