he Clywedog reservoir (Welsh: Llyn Clywedog) is a reservoir near Llanidloes, Wales. Completed in 1967, the reservoir was built near the B4518 road, Powys, to control the flow of the River Severn by river regulation and to mitigate flooding in the lower Severn by storing excess winter rainfall. Its concrete buttress dam is the tallest concrete dam in the UK, with a height of 72 meters and a length of 230 meters. When at capacity the reservoir contains approximately 50,000 megalitres of water. A second, much smaller embankment dam is located at Bwlch-y-gle to prevent overflow into the next valley.

There are many reasons to visit Elan Valley. Part of the rugged Cambrian Mountains, Elan is a beautiful and unspoilt area made even more compelling by the dams and reservoirs which together create a wonderful, living landscape. The views are stunning and you are never far away from points of interest. Elan is a haven for wildlife, one of the most important sites in Wales and there is always something to warm the heart throughout the year. You will marvel at the engineering enterprise of the Victorians in building the dams and the railways which served their construction. http://www.elanvalley.org.uk/

Arts & Culture

www.andrewlogan.com Andrew Logan belongs to a unique school of English eccentrics. One of Britain’s principal sculptural artists, he challenges convention, mixes media and plays with our artistic values. Since its beginnings, Logan’s work has depended on the inventive use of whatever was to hand. With flair and fantasy he transformed real objects into their new and different versions. His artistic world includes fauna, flora, planets and gods. His love of travel provides the bases for several series of work.

www.wllr.org.uk Opened in 1903 to link the market town of Welshpool to the rural community of Llanfair Caereinion, this 2 foot 6 inch narrow gauge steam railway now provides a tourist service for all the family and a welcome change from the rush of every day life. Built as a Light Railway to avoid some of the costs of railway construction, the narrow gauge allows for tight curves and steep gradients, enabling the line to follow the contours of the countryside. Most of our trains are steam hauled, either by one of our unique original locomotives or one from abroad. The carriages too are special; those in regular use being from Hungary and Austria
