Ascutney Outdoors offers a remarkable four-season venue for outdoor activities and nature lovers within the beautiful and diverse ecosystem of Mount Ascutney.
During the winter there is downhill skiing on the weekends when there is snow. There is one T-Bar and a rope tow. Daily pass is $20. (There are no lessons or equipment rental). There is a warming lodge and a fire pit. This is a laid back place with mostly locals. This is a grey place for younger kids to ski. There is tubbing available as well, with a tube lift for a separate cost. There is a groomed cross country skiing route. For the advanced skier back country skiing is available for third willing to hike up. There are 35 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails that are popular during the Spring, Summer and Fall. Hiking trails connect to Mount Ascutney State Park where you can explore the mountain and climb the observation tower at the top.

Book a kayak or tubing trip on the Connecticut River. Team will provide everything you need to do your trip. There are no rapids that have to be traversed so it’s an easy fun time. I prefer to Kayak, takes a little less time. Best part of trip is that it ends at the Harpoon Brewery both businesses share the same parking lot. https://www.greatriveroutfitters.com/

Explore Mount Ascutney for great views. The park has four trailheads and more than 12 miles of hiking trails. During the summer months you can drive to the top. The trails lead hikers to the sites of former quarries and homesteads, relics of past logging operations and other remains of a bygone era. Each trail boasts vistas with spectacular viewpoints of the Connecticut River Valley era en-route to the observation tower at the summit. Visitors seeking a less-strenuous trek may drive up the 3.7-mile Mount Ascutney Parkway to a parking lot at an elevation of 2,800 feet. A hike of nearly one-mile leads to the summit where there is an observation tower. In addition to hiking, the park is popular with visitors seeking a less-traditional visit. Each summer hundreds of participants from all over New England compete in automobile, bicycle and running races up the auto road. With its two launching sites, the park is also a favorite of hang gliders.

Food scene

This is my favorite place to hang out in VT. The taproom has a restaurant with good pub eats. Harpoon brews much of the beer on premiss, my favorites are Rec. Leage, Rainbows Are Real (not a fan of the name) and Catamount, the first small batch beer brewed in VT since 1984. Great During the summer you can play bags outside. There is outdoor seating with some picnic tables and some Adirondack chairs. There is seating inside but you must have reservations. During the winter there is a bonfire outside and there are some outside dining pods. There is also the indoor dining area, however you have to have reservations. I pair a visit here with a Kayak trip using the Great River Outfitter. They are located across the parking lot and they will take you a few miles up the river to drop in. You end the trip at the brewery! https://www.harpoonbrewery.com/windsor-brewery/

This shop sells high quality fresh meat and produce. They carry a nice assortment of craft beer and wine as well. This is a gourmet establishment it is wonderful, however It’s a little pricy. This is also closest store to our townhouse. I go here all the time, I love their breakfast sandwiches and coffee. This place serves food, sandwiches, soups and burgers. They have ice cream in the summer. There is some outside seating and a deck to hang out on. During the summer on Thursday they have live music in the parking lot and serve barbecue outside and local beer on tap.

This place has great food at reasonable prices. They make lots of hot and cold sandwiches. My favorite is the Thanksgiving sandwich. They serve fried chicken as well. Mike’s has a huge craft beer selection to choose from. They carry Lawsons which is a favorite of ours. There are some groceries and chip available too. Do not let the outside of the building fool you. Yes they sell gas, but it’s a take out restaurant with great food.

I like this restaurant because it’s open late 7 days a week and it has great food. They are open 11am to 10pm except for Sunday when they close at 9pm. The steak quesadillas are fantastic, they got the marinade down on this. There is a lunch special on appetizers and Margaritas.

Sightseeing

Is a great experience where you can go and see glassblowing in action. There is a small hydroelectric plant you can see. Shops are located upstairs where you can buy what is being made. There is a bar and a restaurant that is very nice $$$. You should have a reservation if you plan to eat there. This business is located next to a covered bridge and has a small falls to enjoy. Great place to take photos. During the summer I like to watch the local kids swing from the rope swing under the bridge into the water. Restaurant https://www.simonpearce.com/our-restaurant
