Coffee & Breakfast

Charming cafe with coffee, baked goods, wine cellar, cheese, charcuterie, and heat at home meals. We love the quiche and gluten-free coffee cake. This is our go-to spot for coffee in town.

Need coffee beans & care about things like single origin and natural process? Isadora Popper is a boutique downtown that happens to sell beans from roasters like Methodical and Red Rooster. It's also a super cute boutique with everything from yarn to art prints, ceramics and hot sauce.

Food scene

Put this spot on your list for whatever meal/snack/drink serves your schedule since it's a little off the beaten path. Regardless it's one of our favorites in the area for a bite. There's a full service restaurant and coffee shop/boutique in front. The boutique is filled with cute stuff for the home, and the coffee shop sweets are always delicious. If you're a Ted Lasso fan, be sure to get the incredible Ted Lasso shortbread. The pre-packaged giant peanut butter cups are also amazing. The farms have a little pond where you can feed ducks, and the the whole place is tastefully designed. The restaurant is always delicious.

The sister restaurant to Fortify (next door). This is one of our favorites, but be warned of hours that change on the whim of staff and weekends with long waits. The meatballs are a must, and the pizza is always a crowd pleaser.

Sort of classic Red Checkered Tablecloth Italian. Usually crowded, but does a good job with To Go food if you don't want to wait for a table. Recommend the Chicken Parm and Alfredo.

Hiking & Outdoor Adventuring

One of my favorite hikes in town. It’s about a 20 min drive, but you drive the road along Lake Rabun and it’s really beautiful most of the way. The hike is about 2-2.5 miles (total mileage, out and back) and you’ll go past 3 waterfalls. It’s got some steep parts, but it’s mostly pretty easy. The whole trail is wooded and pretty; the two miles flies by! The tiny town of Lakemont is on the way and you can stop for sandwiches or snacks on the way there or back at the little market. It’s called the Open Door at Alley’s Ol Store. You can find the Angel Falls Trailhead on Google. It’s at the crossroads of Lake Rabun Road and Jo King Lane. There's parking on the side of the road and signage indicating the trailhead.

Close to the house with lots of hiking options is Warwoman Dell. I’ll be honest and say that we frequently have gotten just a tiny bit lost on the trails here because GPS isn’t great. But there’s lots of hikes of different lengths that branch from here and there’s a creek and waterfalls. It’s very pretty and has everything from mile long trails to 27 mile trails. Use the AllTrails App for trail guidance and maps.

Black Rock Mountain State Park is about 15 min away. The Lake Trail is super easy and flat if you need something without much incline. The Ada-Hi Falls is short but very steep (like staircase style for a good chunk of it) with a pretty waterfall. And the Tennessee Rock Trail has some really beautiful views from the top. If you’re into Appalachian culture and food check out Foxfire while you’re up there. Google Foxfire Heritage before you go to really appreciate the legacy of it if you aren't familiar.

If you don’t have a lot of time for a big hike but want to get outside, I recommend Darnell Creek Falls. It’s about a 10-12 min drive and you can actually take your car straight up the lane (it’s often very muddy at spots, so maybe don’t drive the whole thing if you don’t have 4-wheel drive) to the falls. We typically park right in front of the property gate off to the left. It’ll make sense when you see it. But you just hike up the gravel road and it’s about a half mile there and half mile back. Pretty easy. Stay along the creek to the right when it splits. It’s one of those spots that’s more rewarding than you expect for such a quick hike!

Just over the South Carolina border as you cross the Chattooga River is a parking lot (to the left) for the Chattooga River Access. There's a short, paved trail that goes in two directions. If you take it to the right, it'll take you to Bull Sluice, a famous rapid overlook where you can watch kayakers and rafters pass through. If you take it to the left, it'll bring you to the water side "beach." It's a great spot to swim or picnic in the sand. The water is slower moving and shallower there than by Bull Sluice (although you should still be careful!). In the warm months, it's at the top of our list to hang out with the kids.

If you're traveling with strollers or wheelchairs, you might check out the Shortline Trail. It's not inside the park, although I think it's considered a part of Tallulah Gorge State Park. It's all paved. It's shady and there's a pretty suspension bridge.

The Mud Creek Trail (park at the Sky Valley Overlook & start there, look up details on AllTrails for the best directions) has become a family favorite. 2.3 miles (total) out and back, not too steep, but not boring. It follows the river and culminates in a waterfall. For folks that don't want the hike, they can drive past the Sky Valley Overlook and park at the waterfall (the end where you would turn around and hike back for those on foot) and it's an easy walk to the water. To park, you have to pass the overlook and beer right where the road splits (there’s a little diner at the split). Then you enter the Sky Valley community, turn onto Tahoe. You can map to Mud Creek Falls.

Stuff to Do

An old-timey drive in that's super close to the house, and such a fun way to watch movies. They've got concession stands and a playground for kids while you wait for the shows to start. It's closed during the winter months.

There's lots of vineyards in the area, be sure to check out which ones have live music, tasting events, or tours. Some local favorites: Tiger Mountain Vineyards, Stonewall Creek Vineyards, Terra Incognita, and 12 Spies.

Thermostats

Each level of the home has a thermostat. The main level thermostat is located a few steps inside the door along the right wall. Upstairs, the thermostat is in the blue room. If you have the fireplace going and/or the heat cranked on the main level, be warned that the upstairs will get warm quickly. In contrast, the basement can get chilly. If someone is sleeping down there and it's cold, you might get the heat going early to get the rooms to a comfortable temperature. Please be respectful of energy costs and do not run the heat or a/c while windows and doors are propped open.

Fireplace

The main level fireplace is easy to start with the remote. Just point the remote at the little black box (it's labeled) and click on. And then click it again, like a hundred times. Easy, but tricky! Sometimes I move closer or point it at the fire logs. It always works, but rarely on the first try! The basement potbelly stove is decorative and not functional.

The Lofts

Even if nobody is sleeping in the lofts (located in each of the upstairs bedrooms), you should check them out! At the top of the ladder, there's a remote velcroed to a frame on the wall. Pull it off & click it on. That will help set the mood and show the space how it's best appreciated! Weirdling Tower loft, is very dark. There's a lamp in the far corner that you can turn on. There's also a lantern hook in the middle of the ceiling that you can hang a lantern on (there's usually one up there at the top of the ladder and there's always flashlights & lanterns by the front door).

SAFETY

Be warned that there is a small "pond" near the fire pit in the front area of the property. It's only about two feet deep, but if you have little ones, please know that it is there and keep them clear of it. In addition, we do our best to keep cleaning products, chemicals, and hazards out of reach of children. However, between bunk ladders and staircases, utility closets and fireplaces, the home is not child-proof. Please make sure little ones are attended at all times.
