Hiking Trails
My favorite local trails and rec areas.
Beautiful hike anytime of the year. Views of the old trestle and White Sands National Monument on a clear day. 3.2 mile loop. 396 ft. elevation gain. Beautiful meadow on the backside that is perfect for picnics. Dirt parking lot and trailhead located off 82 just after the big bend leaving town towards Alamogordo.

For a longer hike take the trail to left (Willie White Trailhead). WWT is a 9.8 mile out and back hike with a 2,345 ft elevation gain. Take exit 130 off of 82, head back about 2mi, turn right onto Sunspot Hwy, right past mm8 turn left onto Upper Rio Peñasco. This is a well maintained dirt road that most cars should be able to access in good weather. You will know you have arrived when you can see the falls from the right hand side of the road. There is a dirt parking lot and restrooms available for your use. Please pack in and pack out all trash.

This beautiful place offers many options for hiking and exploring. You can here or many areas nearby. For a shorter hike you can take the trail that heads to the right up behind the falls to see where the spring comes out of the hillside. For a longer hike take the trail to left (Willie White Trailhead). WWT is a 9.8 mile out and back hike with a 2,345 ft elevation gain. Take exit 130 off of 82, head back about 2mi, turn right onto Sunspot Hwy, right past mm8 turn left onto Upper Rio Peñasco. This is a well maintained dirt road that most cars should be able to access in good weather. You will know you have arrived when you can see the falls from the right hand side of the road. There is a dirt parking lot and restrooms available for your use. Please pack in and pack out all trash.

Accessible via the Trestle Trail or just off 82 past the large rock retaining as you descend from town towards Alamogordo. Take the right onto Switchback Lane and pull back into the parking area.
This beautiful high desert hike offers great views of the canyon, a stop at Bridal Veil Falls, and the chance to get to see parts of the old trestle still standing from the town's founding. T130 - Grand View Trail: Parking available at trailhead. This 1.7 mile loop offers a view of the valley and all the way out to White Sands. This stunningly beautiful national monument boasts one of the world's largest gypsum deposits. Beautiful hiking, biking, and camping. It's a favorite pastime to ride down the dunes on saucer pans (available for purchase at High Altitude here in town or at the gift shop at the monument entrance). During the warmer months it can be extremely hot out there so be sure to wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, and to bring plenty of water.

Family Friendly Fun

If you're traveling with children and somewhere fun to visit, this is a great option. Located just down the hill in Alamogordo on White Sands Boulevard. The majority of the animals located here are being rehabilitated, and if possible will be returned to the wild. Those that can't be enjoy a comfy home here. You can feed the ducks, geese, and swans by hand, see a wide variety of animals, and enjoy a picnic either in the covered seating area or out on the vast lawn space. There is also a large covered play structure here for the kids. During the warm months it can be extremely hot down there. Be sure to bring a hat and sunglasses, sunscreen, and plenty of water. Early morning visits during this time are best and also when you are most likely to see animal activity.
