First Rate Beaches

Internationally recognized as a Blue Flag beach by the Foundation for Environmental Education, La Monserrate is considered one of the three best beaches in Puerto Rico. It has a rope-designated swim area and the waves are calm and gentle, so it's perfect for kids and distance swimmers alike. There are bathroom and shower facilities, gift and snack shops, and lifeguards on duty. It is also right next to Los Kioskos, just a short beach walk down where you can find 50+ Borinquen restaurants, bars and shops. You can easily pick something up and stroll on back with your snacks or cocktails 🍸 🍹 (totally allowed😎)... Expect the $5 daily fee for parking in the Balneario lot. Work Around: If the lot is closed please don't make the expensive mistake of parking along the yellow curb. Yellow curbs here mean "No Parking," and the tickets are $50 when they check. Balneario La Monserrate can be accessed even on days when the parking lot’s gates are closed by instead parking in the eastern-most lot behind the Kiosks and simply walking over the foot bridge or eastward along the shoreline. We usually choose the newly installed footbridge because otherwise sometimes there’s a rather grimy shallow river outlet that you will have to walk through to get to the nicer/cleaner Balneario 🏖 .

Right down the hill, this beach is walk-able (ride-able if you have a horse). Waves here vary in strength depending on the season. If the waves are large and strong and breaking hard, the undertow can be dangerous here. Best to keep walking westward to Balneario Monserrate where the waves are always calmer, and safe for kids. Playa Fortuna is right next to/ just west of Los Kioskos if you're hungry or feel like a drink. Lots of choices there.

Just adjacent to the kiosks, here you’ll find tons of water sports, food and fun! From airbording and jet-skiing to kayaking and parasailing, there's plenty to get your adrenaline up. If instead you're set on soaking up the sun and relaxing with a cocktail, Playa de Luquillo has you covered too. The Kiosks bordering this beach have 50+ options from snacks to fine dining, and all order of tropical drinks. This beach can get a little trashy with all the food and drink about, and loud with competing portable sound systems. If you want something a bit quieter (and cleaner), all you have to do is stroll a bit further east down the beach and park yourself on a good spot along Balneario Monserrate. The waves all along here are easy and gentle, and the soft sand is perfect for castles!

Just east from Balneario Monserrate, on your way along the coast to Playa Azul, Punta Bandera has shallow waters and gentle bathtub waves perfect for little ones. At low tide, you can walk nearly a quarter mile out and still be wading with water up to your knees. Cool tide pools and little sea creatures too. It’s a less crowded, serene spot enjoyed by those in the know. Nice!

The far western end of this beach stretch has good snorkeling with gentle waves, lots of tropical fish, and a shallow reef tide pool for kids. The central Playa Azul beach is NOT recommended for inattentive back-floating or swimming. Wading is fine. Sunbathing and people watching are also great here. BUT Playa Azul has an unpredictable and dangerous undertow, and numerous strong swimmers have been lost here. Use extreme caution in the water at Playa Azul.

The best beach around for surfing, La Pared’s beautifully mosaiced namesake boardwalk is also great for strolls, jogs, and beachside meals & chats. This is a red flag beach, meaning it is not good for regular swimming. So watch the flags and walk further west if you'd like to take a dip (the beach flags follow traffic light meanings: red=stop, yellow= caution, green=go). La Pared is the beach most central to the seat of the Luquillo municipality, just a block away from the town plaza, church, and mayor’s office/city hall, and two blocks from the Luquillo branch of the US Post Office. There's also a good pizza joint just off the plaza worth trying!

Another one of our favorites, Piñoes beach is awesome because even though the seas beyond the reef can be rough, the huge tide pool near the shore is always calm, shallow and safe for kids. But if you don't put on your snorkle mask you'll miss out on half the fun! This tide pool is a mega aquarium teaming with sea life from schools of tiny tropical fish to small octopi. The tide pool is shallow, 3 ft to 5 feet at its deepest, so it's easy to navigate your way to the reef and climb up to view more amazing creatures too. Best to keep your swim shoes on if you plan to walk up there. Be mindful of sea urchins on your way, and as always "look where you're stepping" or it could be a bad day for both you and that creature! Also, one of the best spots for beachcombers around. Super popular destination on nice days, but parking is usually available roadside or across the street in the lot. If you get hungry continue along the beach drive between Piñones and Carolina where you'll find top rate seafood dining, fresh coconuts and local sweets, and tons of street food joints (mostly serving fried alcapurrias).

The only tropical rain forest in the U.S. Park Service, El Yunque is a treasure. This huge park encompasses 28,000 acres (43.753 square miles or 113.32 square km) of land, making it the largest block of public land in Puerto Rico... Beautiful hikes on well-kept trails, fabulous view-points, observation towers, swimmable waterfalls, and its unique cloud forest that boasts an ecosystem with species found nowhere else in the world make this a must do excursion! El Yunque is Puerto Rico's most visited tourist site, by foreigners and locals alike. Because of Covid-19, reservations are required at the park's entrance. They can be made online for at $2/day fee at: https://www.recreation.gov/ticket/facility/300017 Don't miss the cafe near the top of the park, after the first viewpoint tower. They have lovely outdoor seating and surprisingly tasty lunch options and snacks. We like to sit at tiled tables near the far end of the parking lot and enjoy the greenery. There's also a paved trail right below the cafe that follows the river down the hillside, where you'll find 8 gazebos spaced out along the way for cookouts and relaxing that are amply sized for groups. About a 20 min walk all told. Don't worry, the trail makes a loop so you can't get lost. Just a heads up, cell phone reception in El Yunque is not great, so def download your park tickets Before going just in case they don’t have you on the list, and expect spotty reception at best while in the rainforest (an important thing to factor in of course if you’re traveling by Uber/need to call for a ride). Also, word to the wise: PLEASE don't go off trail in El Yunque unless you are with a qualified local guide. There are numerous incidents of reckless visitors getting lost in the forest, and some are never found... Go to the visitor's center and get expert forest ranger consultation/orientation, stay sober and PLEASE make sound judgements in this huge tropical rainforest park.

If you’re going to El Yunque, don’t miss a trip to the visitors center on your way in! After nearly 5 years and what looks like a $multi-million$dollar renovation, the center finally open just before Christmas 2021. The cost is $8 per adult, and kids are free. They have a large cafeteria and exhibition center, a fabulous gift shop, live endangered green parrots 🦜 🦜 and lots of well-informed staff eager to help you explore the forest. Beautiful and modern and worth the stop!

The Malecón de Naguabo is a beautiful place to visit even on quiet days, but the boardwalk often comes alive as a hot spot on weekends. With 33 eateries of every class serving up the fresh local catch, vendors, and music, it's easy to understand why. This pin is actually for the big public parking lot off the main drag. There is no permanent signage indicating it so you may miss on your first drive by. Look for the very first road on your left once you reach the Malecón. It’s a much better bet than finding parking on the main street, which is limited. Originally settled by the Spanish in 1513, Malecón de la Playa Hucares is considered iconic. Not much left in terms of colonial architecture, but there are ruins of an old castle. If you feel like exploring a bit, there is also a cute beach hidden in a residential area on the other side of the hill at the end of the Malecón. A lovely place to have fun with the kids or catch a romantic sunset.

Ferryboat transport to the Isles of Vieques and Culebra. By all reports, you will need patience for this one! Get there EARLY and get in line. It's much cheaper to buy tickets at the terminal than online. Only runs a few times a day. They sometimes overbook ferries and bump waiting passengers. Early morning runs start around 5 am. Check schedule and plan carefully. On the bright side, the return ferry boat trip is known to be a lot less hassle than the inbound one... If you're not up for this potentially time consuming adventure, I suggest going by air. Flights to Vieques and Culebra out of SJU are often under $100.

Within view from our hilltop home, an easy six minute drive away, the Grand Rio Mar Golf & Beach resort offers top rate tennis and golfing, as well as resort bars and dining and an elaborate breakfast buffet. If you feel like giving the resort a little extra money, they also have a nice casino with slot machines and games of all sorts. $20 for valet parking, $15 for lot parking. They also have a self park garage option with hourly rates as well. Call for details. FYI, by law ALL the beaches in Puerto Rico are public. So ALL the resorts must permit local access. Some resorts may try to minimize this with exorbitant rates for parking like the $30 flat fee the St. Regis Resort charges visitors, but they ALL admit visitors wishing to enjoy the beaches, bars and restaurants regardless of whether they are registered guests. Simply tell the security at their gate that you wish to access the beach or enjoy the dining and bars at the resort and they will gladly admit you. Most are also happy to grant you paid access to their golfing and recreation facilities as well. If in doubt, feel free to call the resort of interest in advance for confirmation of this policy.

Originally the "Trump International Golf Club & Founders Club Residences," Coco Beach Resort (no longer affiliated with Trump) is golfer's paradise. This beautiful property hosts the Puerto Rico Open (the only PGA Tour event held in Puerto Rico) and houses the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Grand Reserve, with its two Tom Kite designed 18-hole championship golf courses. That said, this place is super grown-up -- the only interesting thing for kids here is the beach, though not so much for swimming (the in-shore coral reef makes it sometimes murky and hard on little feet). It's the beach combing that sets Coco's beach apart. For little naturalists it's some of the best beach-combing around, full of treasures for all interested enough to look, and cute little hermit crabs everywhere to be found. The St. Regis is the most luxurious resort in our area. It's gorgeous. Their golf course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., is good for advanced players and considered challenging. The resort also offers tennis. As all beaches are public in Puerto Rico, at the gate you can request to access the beach or enjoy the restaurants even if you're not visiting a guest. But the St. Regis is pricey. They charge a flat $30 for parking (whether you stay for an hour or the whole day) and only offer valet. They offer a parking discount if you spend at least $20 at one of their restaurants (which will buy you a drink after tip, maybe two). They are currently understaffed, so expect slow service and a limited menu. If nothing else it's a beautiful drive through the resort's 483 acre grounds housing the Espíritu Santo River State Eco-reserve, home to more than 240 unique species of flora and fauna. For rain forest and beach horseback riding tours, Carabalí is the place to go. They also offer tractor-pulled hay rides for the kids, as well the best go-kart track around. And of course for the kids-at-heart among us they offer grown up ATV adventures, and have a gift shop, sit down restaurant and bar too. Carabalí also has a lovely beach side Cantina right here in Fortuna for those riders taking the beach trail. After crossing the mouth of the Mameyes River, riders can relax, enjoy the view and a few drinks, or even take a quick dip before heading back.

After crossing the mouth of the Mameyes River, riders can relax, enjoy the view and a few drinks, or even take a quick dip before heading back.
About 25 minutes to the east of us, El Hippie swimming hole is deep enough for high-diving and a generally cool place to hang on hot days. River currents are sometimes strong so care should be taken with children and new swimmers. Often draws a younger crowd of local and international tourists so expect music and ganja smoke on busy days. Parking can be tight, especially on weekends. Always better for swimming on clear days with little or no chance of rain, as flash floods are a possibility with all El Yunque rivers.

Lots of fun river jumping to be had here, as long as you’re up for the 15-20 minute hike on a trail that can sometimes be very muddy, and a steep climb down to the swimming hole. If you need a Shopping mall experience, this is the place to go! They’ve got everything you would expect such as multiplex cinemas, major brand shops such as Calvin Klein etc., several sit-down restaurants, and food court. But they also have an indoor go-kart track, various virtual-reality rides, a boss arcade, a three-story harnessed climbing obstacle course for the kids, and bowling! Good for rainy day fun!

If you're up for a beautiful winding drive up a steep road through the mountains with breath-taking views and hikes to test your endurance, this is your jam. The fit, young, athletic people coming back out of the trailhead ready for a dip usually look muddy, exhausted and satisfied. Even if you skip the hike and just enjoy the lovely swimming hole where the mountain road ends at the National Park entrance, it's worth the trip.

We LOVE Loíza! We've consistently found the friendliest people around, and enjoyable low-key beach time and ocean-gazing in Loíza! We stop whenever we can on our trips to or from San Juan (it's about mid-way). The temper of the water on Loíza's beaches varies from swim-able to rough seas depending on your spot and the season, so exercise good judgment and opt for sand castles instead of water time when the surf's up. Loíza has a rich history of Afro-Puerto Rican culture that still thrives in its Santiago Apóstol festival and internationally recognized local art. Samuel Lind Hernandez has his permanent residential art studio here that is regularly open to the public. Loíza is slim on amenities, but there are a few restaurants and shops for essentials. If you need something fancy and chic after your visit you can always stop at the St. Regis on Hwy 187 on your way out (just half a mile from the westernmost Loíza beach) for spendy drinks and elegance. Remember though, they charge $30 for parking (they only have valet) no matter how long you stay...

This is the best place for a hearty Puerto Rican lunch that won't break the bank! With roasted chicken, fried pork and pork ribs, rice and beans, yuca, codfish, soups and veggies. If you're a pig eating carnivore try the BBQ pork ribs -yum!-the meat is nicely flavored and so tender it falls off the bone. They also serve breakfast, espresso coffee, and good sandwiches. They'll even do an almond milk latte! Plus the people there are lovely. Def one of our favs. Just this December 2021, the Puertorrican Bakery opened a new branch in our neighborhood. “The Puertorrican Bakery II” is here in Fortuna (pictured), just down the hill from us across Rt 3, on the north/beach side of the street. One of the better supermarkets nearby. The closest thing we've got to Whole Foods locally. Our local "Amigo"/Walgreens supermarket was recently bought by Pueblo and has not yet reopened.

Econo is the currently the closest supermarket to us, since our local Amigo/Walmart changed hands and has yet to reopen as a new Pueblo. This large supermarket has an ample whole foods collection, plenty of parking, and is in a strip-mall type complex with a Walmart Supercenter, Pet Smart, Little Cesars, T-Mobile, etc. Both Wendy's and Sizzler are in this complex as well. Caribbean Cinemas, KFC, Dominos, etc. are across the highway.

This is our favorite local supermarket now that the Amigo/Walmart near us has closed. It's beautifully laid out produce section and wide selection are hard to beat locally. Pueblo is our close second, so we'll see how they do renovating the old Amigo...

Another good option for groceries. Pueblo bought our local Amigo/Walmart, but has yet to reopen, so in the meantime, this is the closet one to us.
