Sightseeing

A visit to Loch Ness is a must for many coming to the Highlands. The village of Dores, about seven miles outside Inverness, is a pleasant place to sample this majestic icon of Scotland. A pebble beach, occasionally with interesting driftwood, and a woodland walk beyond at its far end make this a nice option for a day trip. Have a dip if you're brave enough! The Loch Ness Monster has plenty of space so don't worry about Nessie! Head along the B862 out of Inverness and prepare for that first sight of the mighty loch. It can be cycled too for the more energetic. To hire a bike, try Ticket to Ride which can be found in Bellfield Park (01463 419160) www.TicketToRideHighlands.co.uk They offer a number of suggested routes ranging from day trip to three-day excursions.

Inverness Castle (you really can't miss it if walking through the city!) has a fascinating history but, at the moment, is closed to the public. It is about to undergo a major redevelopment. It is worth a visit for two reasons right now though: great views out over the city across the River Ness and well presented information boards around its perimeter telling its story down the years. You'll definitely learn something about the city you're staying in if you take 20 minutes or so to absorb these snippets of info. A nice taster of the Highlands' very rich history. Look out for a statue of Flora MacDonald outside (a favourite perching spot for cheeky gulls!) and find out about her connection to Bonnie Prince Charlie. Where is it? Castle Street...

There's a very strong vibe around Culloden Battlefield - or there is if you have an inkling of how history changed at this site. The visitor centre run by the National Trust for Scotland is worth a visit and includes a very impactful battle scene which you can experience up close. Quite an emotional and powerful experience. To get a feel for why the Highlands are a bit different to the rest of the country, this is a good place to start. Pick your moment and you can find yourself almost alone with your thoughts on the battlefield. Photographers have captured some amazing night skies up there, using an atmospheric little thatched cottage as a foreground. For information on Culloden and how to get there, see https://www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/culloden

Cavell Gardens is a peaceful spot next to the River Ness on Ladies Walk, close to the Infirmary Bridge. It commemorates a brave British nurse and her compassionate efforts during World War I. The war memorial is a local lankmark in the gardens. Nice place to have a seat and watch the world go by.

Supermarket

Recommended because it is so close (a brisk 5 minute walk down the Donkey Path near your base, our home) and convenient for food, newspapers and...well, everything you'd expect in a supermarket. The music almost always seems to be good, too.

Bar

The Black Isle is the peninsula on the other side of the Kessock Bridge, part of the main A9 road running through the Highlands. The Black Isle Brewery (worth a visit for organic beer, cool T-shirts and a quirky tour) can be found over there near Munlochy. The Black Isle Bar, on the other hand, is in Inverness on Church Street. It is a nice rustic affair with wooden floors and big, solid tables. Brews include Black Isle Blonde (wonderful) and Red Kite. The place also does a very decent 🍕 pizza.

Arts venue/theatre/cinema

Eden Court (Bishop's Road, Inverness) is the largest arts venue in the Highlands. You can walk there from here in about 25 minutes, heading towards the river and following it once you cross the bridge that leads out of the centre of town from High Street) Bridge Street. A good introduction here: https://eden-court.co.uk/ It's a pleasant place to enjoy a film or piece of theatre (in normal, non- Covid times). Under Canvas at Eden Court From July for three months, it will stage an Under Canvas event featuring live music. This will be outdoors using a stretch tent. It's a pleasant place to drop in and maybe have a drink and see what's playing. Events are bookable with food and drink sold. Can be a nice relaxed vibe with some great music at a nice spot close to the river in the city. The cinema has some good independent/arthouse movies amongst more popular titles. Definitely worth a look. See https://eden-court.co.uk/under-canvas for details

Museum and Art Gallery

The Inverness Museum and Art Gallery nestles in the shadow of the castle, in the heart of the city. An insight into Highland history is offered here with some natural history thrown in. The gallery features changing exhibitions. It's a good way to get a feel for the story of the Highlands and is also very conveniently located.
