Food scene

Some of my favourite eating places in Paros.
One of my favourite places to eat good traditional and Mediterranean food, and lay on the sun beds. It feels like it's built on top of the sea, and you can either reach it by car or by traditional Greek boat transfer from Paroikia port. Highly recommended for a beautiful day out. You need to book sun lounges and the restaurant in summer to ensure a place

This is a lovely little taverna with wonderful views over the valley of Lefkes and to the sea. Set just outside the mountain village of Lekfes, Aranto serves excellent Greek cuisine, specialising in meats (their sausage is really good). I recommend making a booking in the summer. Overlooking Ampelas beach, Blue Oyster serves delicious contemporary Greek food and is another favourite of mine. Excellent quality, beautiful serene location right on the sea, and great service. They don't have a website right now, but I recommend you book in advance during summer. They also have sunbeds in front of the restaurant for chilling in between meals.

Barbarossa has been serving traditional Greek food since the 60's, and has a wonderful seafood restaurant, sushi restaurant, and bar. The jewel of Paros can be found just 7 kilometers from Parikia, near the monastery of Agios Arsenios, and is never experienced by the hordes of tourists that visit the island in August. The Valley of the Butterflies, a unique natural site on Paros, with dense vegetation: cypress trees, ivy covered plane trees, wild olive and other fruit trees and a natural well. This environment comprises a rare biotope for Jersey Tiger Moth butterflies, which can be seen perched in large numbers on the tree trunks. The butterflies of Paros are known for their wonderful coloring (brown-black with yellowish extremities and bright red wings) and appear from late May to late July, disappear in August and reappear in September. The disappearance is due to the females seeking places to lay their eggs and die. The caterpillars emerge from the eggs in October and transform into butterflies in May. They sit upon the tree trunks from June to August, and mate in August, continuing the cycle of rebirth. A small admittance fee is charged at the entrance of the valley, and visitors are advised to keep as quiet as possible so as not to startle the beautiful inhabitants of the forest and force them to consume the energy that they require to complete their mission. Check Trip Advisor to find a map to get there.

A beautiful day trip

One of the very special options when visiting Paros, is to be able to take a 7 minute boat ride from Punda (near Parikia) to Antiparos port. You can either go by foot on the boat and visit the charming town and surrounds, or for a more inclusive experience you can take the car on the boat and explore more of the island. It is very economical to take the car and you can find out more information and boat schedules by Googling Antiparos boat schedules. If you go by car you can visit the historic cave, which is about 300 steps down in the middle of a mountain, and visit some of the beautiful beaches including the beach where 'The Beach House' is located, and Fanoromeni beach, as well as having lunch at the famous Captain Pipinos which sits opposite the wonderful archeological site of Despotiko island. If you don't take transport over you can stroll through the picturesque town and port and eat at any number of taverns, coffee shops and restaurants.
