Beaches

Winchelsea Beach is usually much quieter than nearby Camber. Long walks on the hard sand when the tide is out with big skies and views across the marsh on one side and the sea on the other are always a joy, regardless of the weather and time of day. And there are lots of rock pools for children to explore and the amazing sculptures of the tide-worn groins to wonder at. Further away, Camber Sands has miles and miles of sandy beaches and dunes, but can get extremely busy and crowded in the summer months and at weekends.

Nature and Walks

Birdwatchers will be in their element in the nature reserves at Rye Harbour and, a bit further afield, Dungeness. Explore the wonderful world of trees at Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest which has a collection of 12,000 of them. Romney Marsh - great for those that don't like hills! - is dotted with medieval churches of great character. Although they were built to serve small communities in villages such as Snargate, Snave and Ivychurch, they were commissioned by the lords of the manor and were often quite large, to reflect the importance of the parish. There are also great walks right on our doorstep in both the Brede and Tillingham valleys with open fields, waterways, woodlands, orchards, farms and oasts.

Gardens

There are many stunning castles, country homes and gardens nearby including Sissinghurst, Batemans, Scotney Castle, Pashley Manor, Bodiam Castle, Great Dixter, and Merriments. It's also worth checking the National Gardens Scheme website to find private gardens that open at certain times in the summer months - Sprivers and Ladham for example.

Towns

Historic Rye is our town and, as well as providing all basic amenities, it has galleries, bric-a-brac and antique shops as well as cafes, restaurants and pubs. There are several Blue Plaque buildings, former homes of writers and artists such as Paul Nash, Henry James and Radclyffe Hall, a state of the art cinema, and a lovely church, St Mary's, at the top of the town in the Citadel, from which there are gorgeous views across the marsh and countryside. Hastings and St Leonards is full of interesting and quirky shops, galleries (including Hastings Contemporary) and the rebuilt pier. Norman Road and Kings Road are particularly funky and retro, very reminiscent of London in the 60s/70s.
