We love Off the Boat Lobsters! You can call ahead for cooked lobsters and clams (they may do mussels too). Bring your camera to pick-up: it might be one of the best backdrops you see all trip, esp. if you go at sunset. They close at 7pm and run on a seasonal schedule.

Great pastries, coffee, and breakfast sandwiches! This whole little downtown area is worth checking out. Come at breakfast and walk around. You may even find a dinner spot that you want to return to :) If you are looking for a cafe to check email and do some work, this is a great option.

Frisbee's Wharf at Pepperrell Cove - This is a great new spot at the harbor to grab lobster and enjoy the view. It's called FRISBEE'S WHARF (www.pepperrellcove.com). If you are looking for lobster, I would recommend this over the Chancey Creek Lobster Pier.

This is the closest commercial establishment to the house. It is a tremendous setting. I have yet to find a place more idyllic than this to enjoy a lobster. It is simple, colorful picnic tables overlooking the creek, on the other side, all you see are pine trees, and sunset peers up the creek every evening of the summer. It is BYOB and anything else they do not serve. So, people bring salads, table cloths, candelabras, etc. Be prepared for mosquitoes at dusk and for things to cool down. This all said, they know it, and the price of the lobsters is a bit dear and the service is simplistic. The steamers and corn are good, not sure I would recommend the muscles nor raw bar.

This is as good of an Indian restaurant as I have ever eaten in. While I have never been to India itself, I have lived in London for 7 years, and NYC has a fairly vibrant scene.

To give this place credit, it was the pioneer in Kittery Foreside and may have led the culinary revolution in this neck of the woods. We have only been twice and I enjoyed both times. It's a bit more of an NYC scene.

This place is just a testament of how hopping the whole Kittery food scene is. They don't take reservations, but expect to get in unless you're eating late. We have not tried it but it is top of our bucket list.

This place enjoys a commanding view over Portsmouth. Like Chauncey Creek, it's BYOB and straight forward. You pick out your lobster and steamers and they cook it. I must say, it has been some of the best lobster I have had recently.

This is the latest addition to Kittery Foreside. Definitely, one we want to try but it is small and intimate, they do not take reservations, so our larger parties have not had the opportunity to try it out but it looks and sounds lovely.

Essentials

This is the primary food source locally with a lot of great produce. This is the epicenter with striking distance to everything else around you if you are going to eat and cook at home. It has all the dairy, fruit, vegetables, wine, cheese, etc. For Meat, go next door to Carl's, for bread, Beach Pea, for Pasta - Terracotta, and you're done other than Seafood. But if you're around on Sunday, there is a farmers market from 10-2pm in the Post Office parking lot (seasonal).

We go here for their phenomenal balsamic vinegar but then you inevitably wind up buying other lovely things, such as their artichoke pesto.

This beach is just a mile down the road from the house. Parking is limited, so be mindful of the signs because the local police are on the prowl for non residents. But we love to do a walk from the house, on to the beach and out and around the Point. It's a good way to start the day. At low tide there it gives you 75 yards of beach. There is no finer place to make a dribble castle with the fine grey sand on the beach. In the evening people often light camp fires in the sand and bring a picnic. Before 10 am and after 5 pm it is a dog walkers mecca.

This is one of the choices places in the world. It is really only accessible from the house by boat. You need to to get there by canoe, paddle board or kayak. You must be cognizant of the tides. The journey through the tidal mash is more than half the fun. Along the way, there is hardly a visible house as the area is protected by the preserve. Once there, it is nice to tie up to the old abandon trolley pillions and have a picnic. At low tide, it is a mass of beautiful sand. For the really ambitious, you can venture out into the open water, around Seapoint and Garrish Island and all the way back up Chauncey Creek.

This place has a lot to offer. While there is a nominal entrance fee, for which I think you can get a week end pass, there are several picnic areas. Some with grills. Isolated beaches, a large board walk out into Portsmouth Harbor entrance, and a chance to see some remnants of WWII anti-aircraft gun installations, and submarine barricades to prohibit the German U-boats from coming into the harbor, which they did.

Right in our backyard, so to speak, this was a Revolutionary fort. It has a commanding view over the harbor. Visiting the stockade, even in the best of times, you can appreciate how difficult a time our fore fathers had against the British and the elements. Once a year they use the location for reenactments.

Portsmouth has so much going for it. This is not just a museum but an area preserved much the way it used to be. We just enjoy walking around the old houses and gardens, most of which have been immaculately preserved, much the way Sturbridge Village or old Williamsburg is. This is virtually in the heart of Portsmouth.
