Esablished in 1851, San Luis is the oldest town in Colorado.
A steep but quite doable hike to the top of the mesa you will be able to get a spectacular view of the valley and the parish below. The chapel at the top is lovely and is well worth the hike. As the saying goes, "On a clear day, you can see forever!"

The Dunes are beautiful any time of year. Great hiking and breath-taking views await you. In the summer when Medano Creek is flowing, you can plunk your lawn chair in the wide riverbed and let the toddlers play in the shallow water. Do be aware that the sand heats up, so wear appropriate footwear and a broadbrimmed hat is always a good idea. Sand board rental is available at the Sand Dunes pool (Oasis store) and Kristi Mountain Sports in Alamosa.
