Our Favorite Breweries

We’ll start with the largest brewery in Breck: the aptly named Breckenridge Brewery. This craft beer hub began operations in 1990, making it the third oldest craft beer brewery in the state. In 2015, Breckenridge Brewery grew to be the 5th largest in Colorado, producing 70,000 barrels of their signature beers. The company has seven different lines of beer, resulting in dozens of unique brews ranging from easy session beers to hearty small-batch creations.

Although it’s located just outside of downtown Breckenridge, don’t let that stop you from experiencing the excitement, creativity, and community of Broken Compass Brewing. With Trivia Night Tuesdays and Acoustic Sundays, drinking with a friend has never sounded better! If you’re staying downtown, you can get a free ride out to the brewery (and a ride back) on the Lost Bus, the brewery-run shuttle service. Just make sure to call (not text, please) the driver at 970-406-2011. Hours for the bus generally begin around 12pm and run until 8pm. Broken Compass has 12 beers on tap with an eclectic and impressive menu, including a ginger pale ale, a coconut porter, and a chili pepper pale ale. Join the brewery on Mondays at 7pm for the Monday Night Potluck, where you can share your best dish with locals and visitors alike. At the end of the night, everyone present gets to vote on their favorite three dishes. On Tuesdays during the fall (October-November), come up with a killer group name, (such as the infamous The Brewsual Suspects), and head to the brewery at 7pm for trivia.

HighSide Brewing is a newcomer to the valley, opening in May 2018, but it’s already attracted a strong following based on its regular live music and weekly run club. Bluegrass, funk, and blues bands regularly fill the taproom on Thursday and Fridays, while you’ll see runners meeting up on Mondays. You can expect to spend your Wednesday nights at HighSide's weekly trivia night. The brewery currently has 10 beers on tap, (and 6 non alcoholic options), and is always thinking up something new. The kitchen also has a fantastic and broad menu, ranging from a variety of flat breads to cheese boards. HighSide is located on the west end of Frisco near the Frisco Bay section of Lake Dillon, at the corner of Main Street and Summit Blvd. Opening hours are from 11am to 11pm daily.

A great Breckenridge activity for the family is the Highline Railroad Park and Playground. Train enthusiasts will be enchanted by the Engine No. 9 train stationed at the park, which serves as a reminder of the days when locomotives made the perilous journey through the mountain passes of Colorado. Several more historic train cars are on display, and there’s even a train-themed playground where kids can spend hours exploring. Although the exhibit is free, the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance, which operates the park, does suggest a $5 donation. To get there, head south on Main Street until you hit Boreas Pass Road. Turn left, and travel until you reach the park. Keep in mind this park is closed in the winter.

One of the best family winter activities in Breckenridge is sledding at Carter Park. There are typical sled hills, and then there’s Carter Park: a wide, gradually sloping hill with views of Tenmile Range, bathrooms, and picnic tables. You’ll have to walk up, but considering it’s completely free to use the hill, the walk really isn’t so bad. Parents and kids alike will love whooshing down the hill on a sled or tube, and once you’re gassed from all the fun, Main Street is only four blocks away for food and drinks.

Perhaps one of the most alluring aspects of the Mountain Top Children’s Museum is that parents can drop their kids off for the evening without worrying a bit. Every Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday night, the museum runs “Kids Night Out,” when parents can leave their kids to explore every nook and cranny of the museum “parent-free” Of course, meanwhile, parents can have their own night out, too. Besides that, the museum has all kinds of exhibits that teach them about the geology of the surrounding Rocky Mountains, exciting engineering-for-kids programs, and several other activities that make learning fun.

Watch your kids’ faces light up when they see flecks of gold in their pans, just like the earliest settlers of Summit County. Country Boy Mine offers gold panning in Eureka Creek, and includes basic lessons on how to pan for gold as well as the pan itself. What’s so exciting about Country Boy Mine is that you and your family will be panning in the same gulch where settlers once found the state’s biggest gold mass ever. Panning sessions can go for an hour or more, depending on how long you’re willing to try your luck. Best of all, any gold you come across is yours to keep.

When the skiing dies down for the season, that’s when Epic Discovery kicks into high gear. Kids and parents alike will enjoy seeing Breck from new vantage points, including zip lines, high ropes courses, and 4x4 off-road tours. There are several passes and packages available depending on exactly which activities you’d like to do. The previously mentioned mountain coaster is actually a part of Epic Discovery, so if you’re interested in bundling this with other activities, like rock climbing and bungee trampolining, there are plenty of options for this.

Free gondola to the top; It’s all downhill from here. And we mean that in a good way. Simply stroll to the base of the free gondola, then ride it to the top. The hike takes approximately three to five hours, but for the most part, it’s just a leisurely descent. This is a beautiful hike that truly gets you out there amongst the trees. We always tend to recommend mornings, when it’s less congested and generally a more serene jaunt.

A short yet very scenic trail that is suitable for all ages, this beautiful hike is located at the top of Swan Mountain Road. It’s a gentle loop less than a mile long offering views over Lake Dillon, Breckenridge, the Frisco-Vail Pass and Wildernest-Silverthorne. A favorite with bikers as well, if you prefer a longer experience, it offers many access points in which you can extend your journey (by foot or by pedal).

Home to Breck’s largest waterfall, Continental Falls, this can’t-miss spot is great for other reasons too. Here, you’ll experience a little bit of history as well. From rugged abandoned cabins, rusty mine carts, and piece of old trolleys, this is the area that was once inhabited by the gold prospectors of yore.

Leave Fido at home for this one, because while most of the Breckenridge hiking trails are pet friendly, preserving nature and its inhabitants is the first priority in this area. Another great place to catch a waterfall or two (or three or four), the two main trails are just a little over a mile long. But miles from the ordinary. If you’re a fan of pristine white water, bubbling its way down the mountain’s streams and brooks, you’ll want to visit this area first.

Here’s where you reach the summit of your hiking adventure. And we mean that quite literally. Quandary is the highest peak of the Tenmile Range, it is a relatively easy hike by 14er standards. But the panoramic views from its apex are quite difficult to believe.

Mountain Biking

The name says it all. This out and back trail should take you just a little more than hour, and you’ll be following the bubbling Blue River all along the way (as well as a few ponds and creeks, to boot). A generally leisurely and level ride, there is a moderate ascent that lasts a couple hundred feet, but there are plenty of spots where you simply coast and cruise your way to mountain-biking bliss.

Mountain bikers can take a little tour of Breckenridge history on this winding trail, as this is where you’ll cross many old mining roads and historic railroad areas along the way. Be on the lookout for the biking loop’s namesake, as Baker’s Tank was first constructed way back in 1884, and then beautifully restored in 1958 as popular Breck landmark.

This difficult biking trail winds from Copper Mountain to Searle Pass is runs just under 19 miles. There are plenty of fun bridges to cross in the beginning of your journey, and as you cross the Copper Mountain Ski Resort itself. However, it will be a continuous climb that takes you past the treeline, and you can expect snow fields, rapidly changing weather conditions, and often muddy terrain the further you climb. Prepare accordingly, but the views make it worth every pedal.

Hiking in Breckenridge

Nature is full of surprises when hiking in Breckenridge. And that of course includes the weather. No matter what season you’re hiking in Breck, you’ll need to prepare accordingly. Think layers, sunscreen, and plenty of snacks and water to keep your energy levels high and your risk of dehydration low. If you’re headed to the Breckenridge hiking trails in the summertime, we recommend you plan an early start, as thunderstorms are common in the afternoon. A good pair of socks and hiking shoes never hurts either.

High Altitudes

Breck is almost 10,000 feet above sea level. Drink a lot of water before and after, apply sunscreen often, and use caution with your alcohol consumption. Be careful with edible forms of marijuana. Effects are felt long after consumption, typically 1-2 hours later, and it might creep up on you later than you think. If you visit a local dispensary, just ask the staff for guidance on proper use.
