Gerickes Point is quite literally the point at which the long Swartvlei Beach takes a sharp turn. It is a rocky outcrop that may be relatively small (in comparison to the vast stretches of the beach on either side of it), but offers a world of adventure and natural beauty. This sandstone formation juts out of the sandy surrounds, offering a stunning vantage point from the top. It is relatively easy to climb (even barefoot), although there are some slippery sections that aren’t ideal for visitors that aren’t steady on their feet. From its apex, you can gaze out onto the Indian Ocean, watch the impressive waves roll in and the surfers taking advantage of them, and even see dolphins and whales in the warm waters. In fact, every year, between July and December, humpback and southern right whales come past this part of the Garden Route and enjoy entertaining their human spectators with blasts of air, some lobtailing, and plenty of peeking out from the water to see what’s happening on the land. At the foot of Gerickes Point, there are incredible rock pools. Their waters are turquoise and often warmed by the sun, making them fabulous for a quick dip (even for little ones). They are teeming with life, coral, and shells and are so much fun to explore. Even children can safely snorkel here as the tide goes out, as they are shallow and are not particularly influenced by the waves. However, it’s important to come here when the tide is going out for the best and safest snorkelling. When the tide comes in, these rock pools disappear under a sheet of water. The walk from the parking area to Gerickes Point is about two kilometres long and is entirely along the flat sands of the beach. Along the way, there are fossil dunes and fascinating rock formations. Visitors that want some privacy can often find a secluded spot in the rocks; where the views are spectacular and only the occasional family may amble past. Make sure to check the tides before adventuring, better suited for low tide.

Just 5 km east of the holiday town of Sedgefield you will find a unique Lake, Groenvlei. The lake is not large, maybe 4 km long and 1 km wide, it is also not deep, the maximum depth being around 3 metres with very few deep sections which go up to 5 metres deep. It covers an area in excess of 3 square kilometres and of all the Garden Route lakes, Groenvlei is the most unique. The word Groen is the Afrikaans word for green and this is one of the lakes peculiarities. The water in the lake is clear but has an aquamarine appearance which is caused by the reflection of sunlight on green algae against the light coloured lake floor and the greenery in and around the lake. Another point which makes the lake unique is that it is a fresh water lake which has no recognisable inlet or outlet. It is said that the water seeps up from subterranean channels via springs and is slightly saline. Depending on rainfall and evaporation, the levels in the lake can fluctuate by nearly 2 metres. The lake is known for its diverse bird life and is one of the best venues for large-mouth black bass angling. The banks of Groenvlei are heavily reeded with fen grass, which in centuries past was trampled by grazing hippos in particular and thirsty wild life like elephant, buffalo, eland and bushbuck which came to drink at the lake. Since these animals no longer roam freely in the area, these reeds appear to be encroaching on the lake. This makes the lake difficult to access in parts except at the few boat jetties and from the lawn near the caravan park, but despite this the lake is still a very popular and pleasant place to swim.

This stretch of beautiful unspoilt beach falls within the Goukamma Reserve and is a must-do if you like beach walks. This is the ideal place to come relax, unwind and get away from it all and just walk for kilometers. From the parking area you can walk towards Sedgefield's Myoli Beach or east towards Knysna. It is possible to walk all the way to Buffalo Bay, but this is quite a long walk. It is advisable to do this walk at low tide otherwise some sections might be impassable. This is also a great spot for shore fishing, but no bait or oyster collection is allowed.

Cloud 9 is an impressive ancient sand dune on the eastern side of the Swartvlei Lake that reinforces the nature oriented character of the village of Sedgefield. Everyone who visits Sedgefield should take a ride (by car or mountain bike or even day-hike) along the dirt road that begins at Egret Street on the north side of the N2 reached just before the dual carriage-way ends as the road leaves Sedgefield in the direction of Knysna. Initially tall trees and thick undergrowth block the view as one travels up the dune road, but eventually one arrives at a cleared area. It gives one spectacular panoramic views over the whole town, the island, over the sand dunes running behind the beach to Gerickes Point and to the Indian ocean. One can see how the Swartvlei estuary winds around the island and curves eastwards to run parallel to the seaside dune until a gap in it allows the river to flow into the sea. It is a breath-taking sight that completely transforms peoples’ perceptions of Sedgefield. This is also a famous spot for paragliders!!!

Why not take a walk along Swartvlei beach, starting at the rivermouth down to Gerickes Point. Here you will often be able to spot the Humpback and Bottlenose dolphins swimming nearby as well as the Southern Right whales which come here between June and October. Swartvlei Beach is a fantastic place for surfers just starting out or those at a more expert level. Horse riding is very popular along this lovely beach and you will often see people jogging along the waters edge. If you enjoy fishing, this is the ideal place to catch a few. Get your bait and tackle out as there are a couple areas where you may be lucky enough to catch some Moonies and Stompies or the odd Leerie and Cob (season dependant). There are plenty of safe spots to swim in, away from the stronger currents, making Swartvlei beach great for children too.

Victoria Bay (or "Vic Bay" as it is called by those in the know) is one of the smallest bays on the Garden Route. Traveling along the N2 National Road, Victoria Bay is 3km off the N2 and situated between George and Wilderness. Victoria Bay is a special find - small, beautiful beach, almost hidden between George and Wilderness. Basically a cove enclosed by cliffs, Victoria Bay is a small resort made up of a number of cottages clustered around the water front. The gently sloping beach makes bathing safe and big waves from far out give surfers a particularly long ride. Victoria Bay beach has a safe bathing area and it's own tidal pool and jetty, is also close to some beautiful areas where there are walks and trails for the whole family to enjoy. Victoria Bay Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the vicinity for safe bathing and is ideal for angling and a challenge to top surfers. There are natural paddling pools amongst the rocks where children can spend many happy hours playing. Young and old can splash about or quietly observe the little fish in the tidal pools.

This bustling Garden Route town is a hot holiday spot and one of the ports of South Africa. It is set on the sun-washed slopes of Cape St Blaize, overlooking the expansive bay, and against the blue-black backdrop of the Outeniqua Mountains. Mossel Bay features in the Guiness Book of Records as having the mildest all-year climate in the world, second only to Hawaii. Add to this the long stretch of beaches, the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, a championship golf course or two and Mossel Bay becomes an ideal retreat for both summer and winter. Mossel Bay is famous for its mussels and oysters and some of the largest catches of tunny and black marlin are made on this part of the coast. Tunnel Cave is a 60-metre passageway through the headland of Cape St Blaize, which emerges on stretch of wild coast where the beaches are notorious for their variety of sea shells. Amongst the surfing fraternity, Mossel Bay is up there on the list with Jeffreys Bay and Port Elizabeth and Outer Pool is probably Mossel Bay’s most famous wave. Water sports are enormously popular and whale and seal watching and scuba diving a way of life. Mossel Bay with its wide beaches for safe swimming and the awesome cliffs of Cape St Blaize’s southern shores, with the ever-watchful Outeniqua Mountains in the background provides a welcome and a worthwhile stopover on the Garden Route.

The incredibly beautiful area of land that lies between the Tsitsikamma Mountains and the sea stretches west to the Bloukrans River and east to Eerste River, and is named after the San word that means "place of abundant water". Old Nick Village offers visitors a “creative lifestyle shopping experience” and is a landmark in this seaside town. Originally it was a Gansvlei General Dealers Store, a trading store, which was built by Aaron Toplis in 1880. The shop traded until the 1960’s when it was forced to close due to the local population (and main customers) moved to the newly built New Horizon Township. Today the village is a thriving centre which offers shops of all variety. The Old Nick Shop offers a selection of textiles and ceramics while the Red Barn offers a selection of delectable treats. Martie, a hand spinner, claims she is able to teach anyone aged from 2 to 102 how to hand spin, so why not stop past and see if she rises to the challenge? Otherwise visit the vibey, eclectic shops and galleries that find their home in the lush gardens of the Old Nick Village.

It’s not often that us South Africans stumble across authentic Italian cuisine, so we’re always delighted to find a gem like Enrico’s that would make any Italian proud. With its mind-blowingly beautiful position and lip-smacking menu, Ristorante Enrico has the winning combination of delectable views and delicious food. Start with the anti pasti menu, consisting of Italian favourites such as insalata di mare, which includes prawns, mussels, a piece of linefish and calamari strips, or the more South African flavoured kudu and avocado dish. Fresh seafood is prepared with expert Italian flare, such as the kingklip fillet, with shrimp, caper and cream sauce. Veal is served with cream and a green peppercorn sauce, or more of a lemon and white wine sauce. Linefish is baked with olive oil, white wine, a touch of garlic and ‘lots of imagination’!
