TIMIOS STAVROS -MAGARIKARI Built at maybe the most beautiful landscape of the area, the church of Timios Stavros is considered one of the most important churches in the area too. Out of the village starts an uphill path, which leads you to the Church. The view of Magarikari, Faneromenis dam and the sea from there is fantastic. Our Church commemorates the Feast of the Ascension of the Holy Cross at September 14th. If you like walking, it’s a beautiful destination. You need to walk one hour and thirty minutes to get there but the path, the clean air, the view, the beautiful trees and flowers, the sounds of the birds, the smell of the plants and trees will repay the efford you made to get up there.

The Grammeni fortress lies at the end of a dirt road between the villages of Magarikari and Grigoria. The view from all sides of the fort is beautiful, with on one side beautiful mountains and the two villages, and on the other side the sea with the Paximadia islands. Υou can see it from the the large statue of the resistance hero Captain Ρetrakogiorgis who was the first to enter the liberated Heraklion in 1944. It was built by the Turks in the 19th century as a strategic location in Μessaras plain. When Magarikari was destroed by the Germans in 1944 its inhabitants foud refuge in the fortress of Grammeni.

«FANEROMENIS DΑΜ» 10 minutes away from Magarikari. The artificial lake covers an area of approximately 1000 acres and has a capacity of 20 million cubic meters. It is mainly watered by the river Koutsoulidis, that gathers water from Rouvas wood. The dam was constructed in 2005, to meet the increased demand for irrigation of the Μessara plain. In the few years of operation, the lake of Faneromeni has become an extremely important wetland, where rare birds and animals nest. The dam can be accessed through Vori village, near Phaistos. Road signs show the way. A walk in the dam and the abandoned village of Laloumas near its banks during the spring is a wonderful experience.

The gorge of Agios Nikolaos or Rouvas is is the most important gorge of Psiloritis and central Crete and took the name Agios Nikolaos from the monastery of St Nicholas at its exit near Zaros. This is an ecosystem with rich flora and fauna, smaller canyons and interesting geological formations and cliffs of rare beauty. It has a total length of 4 km with 2,7 km being well-shaped by the Forest Service for soft activities such as hiking, mountaineering, rock climbing, naturalism and observation of wildlife in a truly unique environment. The trees of the area are very old, the diameter of their trunk in some cases exceeds 1 meter and their height can reach 15 meters. They grow in very dense formations, thus they constitute a unique forest biosociety, with many species of shrubs to complement the vegetation. Proposed routes : First Route: ZAROS LAKE - SAINT JOHN (2.5 +2.5 HOURS RETURN) Second Route: PSAKOFARAGO – AGIOS IOANNIS - LAKE ZAROS (5 HOURS)

Matala is one of the most popular tourist destinations of Crete and certainly the most famous beach of south Heraklion. It is famous for the carved caves in the rocks and the hippies of the ‘70s. There is a beautiful sandy beach, 300m long, with fine gravel and crystal clear deep water. Moreover, the seabed is quite rocky in some places (especially in the central part of the bach) and waves are common, due to frequent west winds. The beach is very well organized with umbrellas, toilets, showers, lifeguard, first aids, beach volley courts, snack bars, water sports, excursion boats, a camping site, etc. Around Matala you will find many options for entertainment and eating. Also, a large part of the beach is covered by tamarisk trees, where you can find shade. In the evenings, the bars on the beach are full with many people, both locals and foreigners. Especially in June, the internationally renowned Matala Festival takes place.

Κommos is located, just 2km north of Matala and close the village Pitsidia. You can access Kommos by driving in the road heading to Matala, till you see a sign to Kommos near Pitsidia on your right hand site. The entire beachfront of Μesara is exposed to westerly winds, which mostly blow in the area. Thus, caution is needed because the seabed in some places is rocky. The protected loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) lay their eggs in the sand of the beach, from May to September. In frond of Bunga Bunga there is sand.

KALAMAKI» 18 km from Magarikari. Its a beautiful place to spend a day of your vacations. You can swim drink coffee and eat. When its windy dont go!! You maybe lacky enough to see an excavation of careta cateta!!!! Kalamaki is a small seaside village, between Matala and Kokkinos Pirgos. The beach has blond sand and the seabed has a long smooth rock, quite slippery. Large waves that are usually caused by the northwest winds, combined with the rocky bottom, make it difficult to access the beach sometimes. In front of the village, the beach is well organized with umbrellas, sunbeds, taverns, rooms, lifeguard, playground, water sports, etc, but if you want to stay remote you could walk to the southeast, till Kommos beach, which is preferred by nudists. In the sandy beachfront of Μesara Bay, the protected loggerhead sea turtle lays its eggs.

Its a very beutifull and clean beach !!! The road is not very good to get there and you need to walk to get to the beach 20 min but the view and the path is beautiful!! Even kids can follow!!! It worth the efford!! There is a cafee when you start walking !!! To get there you must either cross the gorge, by easy hiking of about 25-50’, or catch a boat from Matala, Agia Galini, Kokkinos Pirgos or Kali Limenes. We definitely recommend the first option, as the route within the vertical walls of the gorge is breathtaking. On the way you will see the large caves were some hermits from Odigitria monastery still live and the chapel of St. Anthony with a small well with brackish water. The beach at the exit of the gorge is stunning, with fine pebbles and clear blue water, which is usually calm. West of the beach a beautiful rocky arch is formed, beneath which you can swim. Vertical cliffs surround the beach. Naturiism should be avoided here, as the wider area is one of the most religious places of Crete.

The most beautiful beach!!! 40 km from Magarikari. The water is very clear!! The first beach, known as Small Triopetra, is located in a closed sandy and rocky bay, south of the three rocks. On the beach there are a few rooms and taverns, and umbrellas are offered. The main beach of Triopetra, West Triopetra, is formed west of the rocks and extends to the west for some kilometers before the beach of Ligres. The beach has beautiful coarse sand and nice water colors. Its west-orientation makes it vulnerable to the western winds and high waves, but also famous for its fantastic sunset. The east part of the beach is mildly organized with taverns, rooms and umbrellas, but never seems crowded. Free camping is not allowed on the beach, but there is a stunning big cave with shape Δ near the three rocks, where you can find shade. The west part of Triopetra is not organized at all. I prefer the small Triopetra. When its windy watch out the sand ...Its a beautiful place to visit while you are staying with us. Our kids love it...

Melissa Cape sandhills, perhaps the most beautiful beach of prefecture Rethymnon, is a fantastic bay in a wild and majestic scenic landscape with huge sandhills. There are a few umbrellas (that’s all!), but you can find shade in the rocky caves shaped in the middle of the beach. Moreover, given its large size, the beach never seems busy and you can easily stay nude even in peak season. The beach has rich seabed and is ideal for snorkeling. The only problem that you may encounter here are the west winds, causing large waves regularly. Additionally, the water temperature hardly falls below 15 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for swimming in winter. The sunset of the area is stunning and the peaceful atmosphere has attracted a very good club of yoga and Tai Chi, with some of the best trainers in the world. The best sunset can be viewed from peak Thronos, directly above the beach (some 300m high, vertical cliffs). To get there follow the dirt track starting just next to the point where the roads Agios Pavlos - Sactouria and Triopetra-Agios Pavlos join and then walk to the edge of the cliff. This point overlooks Paximadia islets at south, Gavdos island and the White Mountains

If you like driving and walking its a good choice to visit. Its 1:30 min away but its worth the effort !!! Its a beautiful place to visit while you are staying with us!!! 42 km from Magarikari. You can swim eat and have s coffee there with your kids. Lendas is a remote coastal village located 74km south of Heraklion, on the southern slopes of the imposing Asterousia Mountains. It is a tourist resort, mildly developed, offering very relaxing holidays. Lendas can be accessed from Agii Deka, close to Mires town, via the village of Miamou, through a narrow paved road. This road crosses the rugged mountains and descends from an altitude of about 1000m to Lendas (sea surface) in a route that offers breathtaking views over the sea of Lendas. The surrounding area is full of beaches that attract many nudists. The beach in front of the village Lendas is protected on the east from Cape Psamidomouri and on the West from the famous Cape Lion, about which we discuss later. This beach was the old port of Lendas, which has now been moved to Loutra. It is the busiest beach of the area, slightly organized and offering basic services such as umbrellas, showers, sunbeds and water sports. Moreover, beside the beach there are several taverns and rooms to rent. The trademark of the beach is its ducks, which stroll upside down. Moreover, the threatened loggerhead seaturtle lays its eggs on the beach of Lendas between May and September. If you want to stay secluded, you can visit the remote beaches of Dyskos and Loutra.

14 September Church of Holly Cross

Built at maybe the most beautiful landscape of the area, the church of Timios Stavros is considered one of the most important churches in the area too. Out of the village starts an uphill path, which leads you to the Church. The view of Magarikari, Faneromenis dam and the sea from there is fantastic. Our Church commemorates the Feast of the Ascension of the Holy Cross at September 14th. If the weather is good villagers go up and they eat all together. You need to walk one hour and thirty minutes to get there but the path, the clean air, the view, the beautiful trees will repay your efford.
