Arts District (DTLA), is 5-15min from home depending on traffic. My favorite restaurants are here, Cafe Gratitude (vegan) and Zinc Cafe (vegetarian), check out Spirit Guild (distillery), Arts District Brewery, Urth Cafe, Arts District Co-Op

Highland Park is 15-25min depending on traffic, it's an up and coming area that's super cute. Try Kitchen Mouse (vegetarian) or Cafe Birdie, check out Highland Park Bowl, Kindness & Mischief Coffee, Kinship Yoga all on Figueroa Street, on York Ave check out Donut Friend, Hermosillo, and Block Party.

Touristy Things  Hollywood: Hollywood & Highland is a good place to park if you don't take the metro (I usually don't in LA), walk the Hollywood stars and check out the area. There's a great view of the Hollywood sign from Lake Hollywood Dog Park, a TMZ tour is pricey but a lot of fun Beach cities: rent bikes easily to take on the bike trails from Santa Monica to Redondo Beach (west beaches) or kayaks/paddle boards/surfboards on any beach west or in Orange County Universal Studios Disneyland
