The steep and iconic shape of Walsh's Pyramid can be seen to the south from most locations across Cairns. You could be forgiven for thinking it is a tree covered man-made pyramid – the shape is almost perfect, but it is the highest freestanding natural pyramid in the world. The mountain is 922m tall and quite steep so you need to be fit and healthy to make the climb to the summit. For experienced hikers, the ascent and descent can take approx 3 hours. Allow for longer if you are not an avid hiker or if you are taking kids with you. Well worth it for the views from the summit. From Cairns, drive 30 mins south past the small town of Gordonvale.

For an adrenalin rush, test your fear factor with a bungy jump at AJ Hackett. The jumping tower is perched above a gorgeous pool with stunning views of the surrounding rainforest and out towards the Coral Sea. If the idea of throwing yourself off a high tower towards a shallow pool with a giant rubber band attached to your ankles is a bit too much, then try the Minjin Swing - a giant multi-person swing swoops you over the treetops.
