Might look like a German Restaurant, but is actually one of the best Pizza places in Karlsruhe. What makes it so special is that unlike most Pizzerias, they use a traditional wood-fired oven. Their grapevine roofed outdoor area is really to enjoy a warm summer/autumn evening. The pies are huge, so if you want to go for something lighter try the Pizzabrot, which is basically a pie topped with herbs and spices instead of cheese and sugo.

According to the "Feinschmecker", a renowned gourmet magazine, this is one of the best 100 bakeries in Germany. I don't know if that is true, but at least I can say, that it is the best one, I have visited so far. Best of all, it is just across the street from our apartment (and the remaining 3 more stores are close-by as well). Our favorites are the "Gassenhauer" bread/bread rolls, "Salzbrötchen", and their most perfect "Salzbrezeln", we ever had.

Authentic Chinese restaurant, at least according to all my Chinese friends. You can find all of your beloved classics, like "Ants Climbing a Tree", "Mapo Doufu", "Kung Pao Chicken", as well as rather exotic items, like pork ears/kidney/intestines/heart/stomach. Our personal favorite is the beef in Sichuan pepper oil, which is basically a hot pot but with already all ingredients served in the broth. It costs around 10€ and is enough for 2-3 people. Another branch of the restaurant can be found slightly hidden in the Kaiserstraße.

The owners of this Coffee shop have turned their passion for coffee into a flourishing business. The really know how to brew a good coffee and serve some cold-brews and some great filter coffee brewed with a mocca master or V60. Never heard of a coffee lover that has been disappointed by this place. Used to be an insider tip, but it seems that word to mouth is making the place increasingly popular.

Best Italian Gelato in town. The owner is a regular participant in the German/world championships of ice cream making, always ranking in the Top 20. Part of the social project "initial eV" giving people a second chance to find a job (by teaching them the gastronomy business) that were given up by everybody else. Monday - Friday, 12:00-14:00 an inexpensive lunch menu is served here, but the highlight is the Thali, served on Friday and Saturday past 18:00. A Thali is basically a mixed platter of different (vegetarian) Indian dishes, typical for Northern part of India. A plus is their devotion to sustainability, thus mostly organic ingredients are used and the dishes are not too huge to be wasted (you can get some free refill if still hungry after having finished your dish). Reservation is recommended.

Best Turkish restaurant in town. Don't expect to get the usualy Döner Kebab in here, but rather actual real Turkish food. Best to have dinner in here the Turkish way: coming with a bigger group of people, first sharing some Mezze and a bottle of Raki, and then going for a main (charcoal grilled meat/fish) or desert. Lacks of main dishes for vegetarians, though, but the Mezze are a good alternative. Try the Künefe Peyniri, a cheese pastry soaked in sweet, sugar-based syrup - the mix sounds odd, but is really delicious. Might be to heavy for one person, so better share it with somebody else.

By far not the greatest, but probably one of the cheapest restaurants in Karlsruhe: For around 4€ you can get for instance deep fried potato slices with a deep fired piece of Pork Schnitzel, or a plate of "Wurstsalat" (salad made of shredded baloney, pickles and onions). Also serve breakfast all day long. Very popular among students who are on a tight budget and don't know how to cook. Live bands on some days and pub quiz on others.

An amazing retro bar in the multi-cultural center of Karlsruhe, one of the best of town. Good drinks worth their money and a place that attracts everybody. Usually opened until 1-2 am during weekdays and until 4 am on the weekend, where some electro DJs take over the turntables.
Hipsters love this place. Expensive craft beer and extravagant furnishing. Not for everybody, but Craig, the owner is a truly charismatic guy.

During my first visit, there was a guy inside that was working on his book with a mechanical typewriter. As you might guess from this experience, this is not your usual bar, however still an insider tip. Really nice shabby chic interior design, below average drink prices, and a very sympathetic staff makes us always return to this place. Also serve Flammkuchen and electro music mixed by local DJs on some Weekends.

A bar focusing on a large selection of (craft) beers from all over the world. Unlike most of its kind, it is, however, not at all pretentious and comparatively cheap. A nice selection of Whiskeys and Gins can be found on the menu as well. Drink specials (price discount on selected items) on some days.

One of the best bars to hang out in Karlsruhe that is occupying the space of a former sex-shop. Great local electro DJs on the weekends and daily specials (Bingo, Beer-Pong, etc.) during the rest of the week. Great ambience. Unfortunately, very smoker-friendly, so strict non-smokers should consider another place.

Most people don't know it but Karlsruhe is having a pretty active LGBTQIA+ community: regular parties (Buntes Rauschen, Rosa Park, etc.), CSD, youth center, etc. And we have Cafe PRINZs, a fantastic queer cafe/bar where everybody is welcome.

The most special club in Karlsruhe: existing for nearly half a century (with a small change in 2007), perfect 60's to 80's retro decoration and designed to look like a submarine. Inside you can find all types of people spanning all age ranges from 18 to 80, with the average being above 30. Might not be perfect for everybody, but it's really worth a visit if you are looking for the extraordinary. VERY smoker friendly.

An average club opened on Fri+Sa that often plays 90s music. Nothing really special, but still very popular as it is the only in town where admission is free during the whole night. VERY hot during the summers (you can usually get free tab water at the bar if you ask nicely), and long cues on popular days. No dress-code, but highly intoxicated people will be turned away by the bouncers.

Opened in summer 2017 in the rooms of the legendary Carambolage it still has to prove itself. At least in theory the mix sounds rather strange: Named after a cult movie, without having much in common with it; instead 50s retro furniture and electro music. Serves as a bar/coffee shop during the day time, and a club at night. At least the DJs are good, prices student friendly, and Wednesday free admission making it the only place to party during the middle of the week.

Voted for the 8th best club in Germany by the readers of FazeMag in 2014: two floors, fantastic line-up (house in all its flavors) and nice sound system. Never had any problems with the bouncers, but nonetheless they seem to be rather infamous, at least according to many reviews and FazeMag (Top20 most unfair bouncers). The building is also home to RetroGames eV (a video games museum) and several cultural events (e.g. a poetry slam).

House DJ, producer, restaurateur, serial entrepreneur: Sharokh Dini is a true jack of all trades. His current baby is called Monk, named not after the TV detective, but rather after the exceptional Jazz artist Thelonious Monk. So what is so special about the Monk Bar? Maybe its philosophy that admission should be free (unless the booking makes it necessary). Or the really stylish retro ambiance. Or the amazing (and sometimes famous) DJs that turn this bar into a club during the weekends. Or the classy customers... Sure, the prices in this bar are above average, but it's still not at all pretentious and thus always great to hang out.

It's Monday evening, you'd like to go out to dance, but have no idea where? Then "Gelbe Seiten" is the right place for you, as its Salsa (+Bachate/Kizombe/Merengue) Monday always attract lots of people. Don't know how to dance? No problem, it's still a good place to hang out, watch the dancing crowd and enjoy some drinks. Apart from the Monday evenings, there's a couple noteworthy events taking place irregularly in Gelbe Seiten, e.g. the Polish or the Brazilian party.

Expensive food/drinks, slow service, bad food - this tapas bar right in the very center of Karlsruhe would be far from being a recommendation, if it was not for the FREE dance lessons. Each Tuesday, you'll be taught some Salsa, and on Sunday some Kizomba. There's no need to consume anything (if you don't like), neither do you need to bring a dancing partner (partners are rotated), nor to know how to dance (the lessons always start with the basic steps and then progress to a series of dance figures).

Not really sure, if this place is really worth to be recommended, as it is basically just your typical student club that can be found in any bigger city. Nonetheless, there's some reasons why we still keep coming back: the beer garden is great in the summer, some events are actually quite good (e.g. Electro Swing party with DJ Kunststoff, or live concerts), and the open stage event taking place each Sunday (free admission) is the place to be if you wanna party on a Sunday night.

A little piece of Berlin in Karlsruhe: Club, office space, arts gallery, atelier, bar, food - all depending on the time and day. The regular electro-parties on the weekends are legendary thanks to the international line-up. Great food each Thursday (Pizza) and Friday (Pulled pork, Reuben Sandwich, etc). Not sure if we should be sad or happy that despite being more than 10 years old, the "Alte Hackerei" is still considered an insider tip. Anyway, you can expect some really great indie punk bands (some famous, some underground) having shows here. Apart from that, the regular parties are just fantastic (great atmosphere and always full till the end). Our personal favorites are: + Balkan Beatz with KimSka + London Calling with DJ Jane Smith -> BritPop, New Wave + Nette Hackerei with DJ Plüsdchbert -> Punk, 70's, Rock, etc. Didn't check out the 60's parties, yet, but were told that they are equally great. All in all, good value, great atmosphere, and perfect for all ages.

Not great, but still above average: mixed audience, quite good music (rock or bad taste stuff, like 90's hits), no dress-code, and located in a cozy cellar-vault. Basically as old as Karlsruhe itself, this pub is the oldest one in town, at least if you consider that the building has already been linked to a alcohol selling licence issued in 1715. Besides, it has been run by the same people for more than 30 years now. Nice beer garden, foosball table, possibility to watch soccer games and live bands on some days. Amazing Brazilian parties with introduction to different dances (Forro, Samba) and some typical food and drink items.

The probably smallest cultural center of Karlsruhe, located right in the heart of the alternative, multi-culti (and most likely soon to be gentrified) Südstadt. Regular jazz shows, open stage, poetry slam, artist readings, and movie screenings, as well as the occasional music concerts. Cozy, award-winning cinema with stunning interior. Very low ticket prices compared to the competition, while having an exceptionally good movie selection. You won't find Michael Bay-ish blockbusters in here, but instead lots of actually awesome movies. Lots of foreign (non-German/English) , as well as non-dubbed movies here.
