Leila’s straddles two units on Calvert Avenue: one, is a grocery shop; the second a cafe, which serves breakfast and lunch. It is owned and operated by Leila McAlister — who belongs to the same obsessively seasonal school as all of those alumni from St John and the River Cafe. Thus, the daily changing cafe menu is never without a selection of dishes assembled from the freshest produce, both from the U.K. and from continental Europe. Think feta and onion tart; spinach and chickpea soup; or salt pollack, tomato, lentils and chervil. One of Shoreditch’s best-kept lunchtime secrets.

Also in the Vietnamese Kitchen family, Cây Tre specialises in authentic Vietnamese cuisine but concentrates more on the traditional dining experience than its street food-focused sibling (and opposite neighbour) Kêu. The menu features items meant for feasting in groups as much as savouring alone. Try the beef pho, which has an 18-hour prep time; it’s hard to go wrong with a starter of salt-and-pepper squid, too.

High-end but not fusty; low-key but impeccable service. One of Britain's most talented chefs, Isaac McHale has put in time at high-profile spots Noma and The Ledbury. Stunning, meandering tasting menus — chiefly British — with flashes of flavour from such cuisines as India and Japan in the dining room; cult snacks and great cocktails in the bar. Selin Kiazim’s first solo restaurant is a paean to the chef’s Turkish-Cypriot heritage. The small dining room and bar is organised around an open kitchen which uses a wood oven and tiered grill to prepare some of the most ambitious modern Turkish food in the city. Pide (flatbreads) — marinated octopus with ricotta; or a classic lamb lahmacun — are served with a crisp, piquant pomegranate-dressed red cabbage salad with pickles; the regularly-changing grilled meats might include glazed lamb breast or half chicken served with preserved lemon and greens. Despire being in the middle of Shoreditch, Oklava has the warm atmosphere of a discreet neighbourhood restaurant.

Ed Wilson's hearty Franco-Italian menu is a paean to his love of food. To eat here is to share that passion. Wines, which are emphasised, are predominantly natural and biodynamic. Illustrated wine posters, art and curios on whitewashed brick walls also make the two relaxed dining rooms among London's most handsome and cool. Here also lie the city’s smallest and most beautiful bathrooms — among the very first to use Aesop, to boot.

One of London’s most revered Vietnamese, this long-established, award-winning restaurant was instrumental in putting both Shoreditch and the cuisine on the capital’s culinary map. The buzzy, family-run venue’s décor has seen better days, but it’s still the place to go to for fragrant pho soup, which is simmered for many hours, as it should be. The Sunday roast is a pillar in British food culture, but surprisingly few restaurants better the home-cooked version of this national institution. The Marksman’s roast, one of the very best in the city, is worth going out for. But this is a restaurant to visit any day of the week. Delicious, seasonal, imaginative cooking — brilliantly British and refined, this should be the template for the gastropub 2.0 in London. The ox cheek bun is rightfully worshipped.

This offshoot of the influential Moro and Morito on Exmouth Market focuses on north African, eastern Mediterranean and southern Spanish cooking, in a decidedly frill-free yet comfortable dining room with tons of space. Head chef Marianna Leivaditaki’s menus are a delightfully rustic find on Hackney Road, featuring mountain sausage, turbot with fisherman’s broth, and fresh sheep’s cheese with pistachios and orange blossom. Columbia Road might be a beautifully verdant, frustratingly impassable thoroughfare every Sunday, but visit during the week: its near-deserted cobbles covet one of the best Spanish restaurants in London. Laxeiro — with its shy outdoor terrace and light wood interior — serves tortilla, patatas bravas, Iberico ribs, pan tumaca, and pulpo Gallego to rival the peninsula to which it pays homage. Owner Isabel Rios and son Eduardo have created an unassuming wonder over 35 years, and one which will endure many more.

Two chefs — Andrew Clarke and Jackson Boxer — have joined Shoreditch’s wood grill community. This is a restaurant inspired by “very, very drunken lunch” two summers ago at Boxer’s mother’s home, Pound Farm, in West Sussex, which is the source of much of the salads and vegetables. Burro e Salvia is one of London’s top spots for fresh pasta and exists comparatively under the radar. Brat is named after the old English colloquialism for turbot. Here, grill cooking is the focus. Seafood (including whole turbot), sourced from Cornwall; lamb from Wales; beef from the English south west; and seasonal fruit and vegetables from all over, is grilled or cooked in a purpose-built wood oven. Parry differentiates himself slightly from other grill restaurants, aiming to emulate methods used in the north of Spain — using fire to cook his range of ingredients slowly. A comparatively classical 100-bin wine list has been organised by the team from Noble Rot and thus is well worth exploring. Received its first Michelin star — six months in — October 2018.

Shoreditch’s most ambitious bar and restaurant, without question. Ben Chapman has taken the attention to detail, ferocious sourcing and sense of freedom that makes Kiln in Soho such a hit and transported it east in service of Thai drinking food. Barbecued Tamworth skewers and lardo-fried rice are surefire hits; the winner, for now, is the smoked goat massaman aggressed by dried lemongrass.

Leroy is a wine bar and newly Michelin-starred restaurant from the team — Ed Thaw and Jack Lewens — who closed the Michelin-starred Ellory in Hackney. It is inspired by the Parisian “caves” (restaurant wine annexes) where head chef Sam Kamienko cooked before coming to London. Wines are selected from a “broad church,” where classics sit side-by-side with more new-wave, natural varieties. They also feature a number of the wines from Vigneti Tardis, their own winemaking project in Campania, Italy.

Inexplicably, it was reported last year that David Cameron and Boris Johnson ate together at Red Rooster in Harlem. One assumes they did so because the restaurant’s most famous (political) patron is Barack Obama. (American readers: Cameron-Johnson is exactly as uncool as Obama is cool.) Let’s hope they don’t get wind of The Curtain hotel’s big-hitting NYC import so Londoners can enjoy Marcus Samuelsson’s great American soul food without political distractions.

While the original St. John is rightly regarded as the most important British restaurant in a generation, Bread & Wine, the sister site in Spitalfields, is a better and more interesting restaurant today. A sort-of sister site to London’s outstanding Xi’an Chinese restaurant in Highbury, Xi’an Impression. Co-owner Zhang Chao, along with Sichuanese head chef Li Liang, has brought to Spitalfields Xi’an’s regional specialities: Wide hand-pulled “belt” noodles, covered in an umami-rich Sichuan peppercorn, soya-based sauces, and chilli oil — served with Chinese greens; braised beef; or cumin-spiced lamb. Gordon Ker’s homage to quality British meat finds its third expression on Shoreditch’s Rivington Street, and the quality across the menu is extremely high. An exquisite rendering of the classic steak sandwich packs aged hanger, yielding bone marrow and a piquant horseradish sauce into a decent ciabatta — spoonfuls of bracing green sauce are a fine accessory. London has many restaurants that might be called ‘American,’ but this new Shoreditch site from The Clove Club is the first that follows the American model of dining pioneered by David Chang, Sara Kramer, Daniela Soto-Innes, and Fabian von Hauske: ingredients from near, inspiration from far. So: chef Chase Lovecky is cooking Cornish thornback ray wing, with a dill pickle butter, end of season courgettes, and crunchy potato scraps, alongside an admittedly modish sardine katsu sandwich. Guinea fowl stuffed with sausage and paired with broccoli and yuzu is in debt to Chang’s Majordomo as much as it is Clove’s own Isaac McHale down the road.
