Nelson Mandela Square, which directly adjoins the Sandton City shopping mall, is one of the most popular shopping and dining destinations in Gauteng. At the centre of the square stands a six-metre-tall statue of Nelson Mandela, a very popular place for tourists to take photographs. The statue of the late Nelson Mandela was unveiled and the square renamed on 31 March 2004 to celebrate the first decade of South Africa’s democracy. Surrounding the square is a wide choice of cafes and restaurants that bustle from morning to evening.
