The coffee is really secondary here - the baked goods and lunches take top billing. There's not a lot of seating inside, but the outside seating is awesome in the summer, and it's all covered, which makes it an easy place to hang out in insistent sun or light rain. At the crossroads where Main Street meets Middlebury College, this is an easy stop for morning cappucino, a light lunch, and a sweet treat any time of the day.

When George Schenk began making flatbreads over the mountain in the Mad River Valley, his was the first wood-fired outdoor oven I had ever seen. That was in 1987. His recognition that food and community nourish and grow one another has led to a thriving, locally sourced, philosophically focused restaurant in Middlebury (and Waitsfield - the original - and Burlington) with awesome flatbreads, great local brews and ciders, a changing wine list, and adventurous cocktails, all with the same expression of love and community as the original. Our favorite on-budget place to dine in Middlebury. The iconic Marble Works location and the cozy fires make this a great out-of-the-elements, out-on-the-town dinner venue in fall and winter.

Think high ceilings with windows overlooking the waterfall, with food and drink and a good mix of Middlebury College and townfolk. The music is sometimes fantastic, sometimes experimental, sometimes un-polished, but it's always worth a shot.

At their farm just north of Middlebury, Dad Chris and daughter Sara Granstrom (both Middlebury College grads) produce award-winning and awesome cold-climate wines. Their tasting room is host to a great and rockin' winter live music series, and in summer the music on the porch floats over the picnicking listeners relaxing around the pond. A great insider's treat for visitors to Middlebury.

The Trails Around Middlebury system, known locally as TAM, is a project of the Middlebury Area Land Trust in conjunction with the state and private landowners. The 18-mile footpath - and sometimes mountain bike trail - encircles the town, linking town land, private land, river frontage, and schoolyards and other local landmarks. It's our out-the-door hike, with easy access to three points of entry. There is a map at the apartment for your use while you're here.
Middlebury Area Land Trust

This is the other in-town hike that gets you into a sweet hill above Middlebury, with views to the east from a meditative bench and views to the west from another secret bench or from the trail itself. TAM trails criss cross through Chipman Hill, making it difficult at times to end up where you intended. The good news is that it's a fairly small area with a lot of trails to explore, so if you feel lost then there's a very good chance that pretty soon you'll come upon a spot you've been before. Just head down and you'll be back in town. The birds' evening songs are so sweet here.

This is the other in-town hike that gets you into a sweet hill above Middlebury, with views to the east from a meditative bench and views to the west from another secret bench or from the trail itself. TAM trails criss cross through Chipman Hill, making it difficult at times to end up where you intended. The good news is that it's a fairly small area with a lot of trails to explore, so if you feel lost then there's a very good chance that pretty soon you'll come upon a spot you've been before. Just head down and you'll be back in town. The birds' evening songs are so sweet here.
