Sightseeing

People sometimes pass through here and don't recognize the historic value of the area. Stephen F. Austin landed his "Old 300" here, Santa Anna signed his surrender here, the Texas Navy had a famous battle with Mexican ships in the mouth of the river here.

This is a VERY small but lovely wild bird sanctuary located next to Quintana Beach. It's free to visit and definitely worth a stop by if you happen to be in the area during birding season. I would combine this visit with a day at Quintana beach or visits to local attractions within reasonable driving distance such as: Gulf Coast Bird Observatory Sea Center Texas Brazoria Wildlife Refuge

From a July 2019 review - I've never been here before but it was a trip I'll never forget because it was my first Wood Stork sighting. Besides this amazing memory, I was disappointed. There are CDs that you can borrow (AND RETURN) that will tell you about the different stops or attraction points. The reason it was disappointing is that one of the boardwalks it referenced was missing, on one of the stops it offers "universal access" but the concrete path was completely over grown, and other things like this. Besides all this, the nature was amazing and I'll never forget it. I did the auto-tour twice, if you do the trails bring giant mosquito repellent. Watch for the MANY alligators which look like logs on the side of the road. I saw the wood stork, ibis, egrets, caracara, red-winged black birds, night hawks, moorhens, watch for crabs and field mice crossing the road, try not to drive into the grass when passing if you don't have to for this reason, they like to hang out there.

For a small museum, it is jam backed with some cool information and exhibits. Definitely worth the stop. Has a movie room where you can see how Dow built Lake Jackson in the beginning for work housing and included social times. There is pictures of unique events - Like when the Lion escaped and ran down Palm Ln Street!

The Lake Jackson Historical Society holds tours at this site on the first Saturday of each month. That's the only day it is open. But, it is worth a visit if you are in the area on that day. You can see the outlines of a number of plantation buildings from Abner Jackson's sugar plantation, as well as more extensive ruins from the sugar mill. Hurricanes and the ravages of time destroyed most of it, but with what archaeologists have unearthed, you can get a sense of the magnitude of the site. Stop and reflect on the hundreds of slaves that were required to build and work the site, and you can appreciate that while this is interesting and important history, America is better today than it was in those "grand old days".

Recent Review from Trip Advisor - This is a first class dive park with an indoor pool and dressing room facilities. I AM NOT A DIVER. I am however a swimmer who is very tired of pools. Mammoth Lake welcomes folks like me! This place has a history and was a huge sand pit so the water is clean and deep. Had a great swim. Show less

A 2.5-mile paved trail, winding along the east bank of the Brazos River, extends from this entrance to the north entrance. Dow Chemical Company donated this 240-acre tract to the City of Lake Jackson to commemorate the company’s 100th anniversary. The sanctuary, with its extensive bottomland forests, is dedicated as a nature sanctuary. The bottomland forests along the Brazos River constitute one of the most important migratory vectors for landbirds in the United States. Millions of migrants pass through these woodlands each spring as they complete their trans-Gulf migratory journeys, although birders may detect only a miniscule ripple of this avian tidal wave.

Fishing Charter

Cowboy Charters, is not your typical Freeport or Galveston fishing charter, it's a Gulf of Mexico deep sea fishing adventure! We are a full time first class deep sea fishing charter company that runs out of Galveston and Freeport. We run hard and fish further than the average Gulf Coast fishing charter companies out there.

Golf Courses

The Widerness is a hidden gem just south of Houston. The course lives up to its name as you will see all types of wildlife while enjoying this challenging golf course. Driving range, putting greens and chipping greens help you get warmed up for this tree encased beautiful course. Watch out for the snakes and gators when near the water hazards! The ponds are their homes! Best leave your ball and take a stroke to move on. I highly recommend this course.
