he Byzantine Museum is located in the south-eastern corner of Ioannina Castle. It is a two-storey building, on the ground floor of which is housed the central collection of the Museum and which hosts finds (sculptures, coins, ceramics, icons, groves, gospels) from the 4th to the 19th century. This permanent exhibition is being developed in seven halls, corresponding to three exhibition sections (Early Christian, Byzantine, Post Byzantine) with findings from all over Epirus and are indicative of the history and art of the region of Epirus during these periods. The museum's annex is the Silver Craft Exhibition, a traditional and distinctive art in Epirus, hosted in the so-called "treasury". Exhibits of ecclesiastical and secular works from the private collections of Archbishop Spyridon and the golden-haired silversmith Konstantinos Ioannidis, and recently enriched with a series of jewelery and objects donated by Mrs. T.Vellis-Dagoritis. The museum has a ceramic, fresco, mosaic and stone maintenance workshop as well as a storage area in the underground reception of the excavations. It also has periodical exhibitions and other activities and a shop. The aim of the Byzantine Museum of Ioannina is the gathering, protection, study and promotion of works of art and objects covering the period from the 4th to the 19th century. It should also be the heart of a cultural space, to observe the dynamics of the acropolis, but above all to inform the wider public about the history of Epirus as it is reflected in the finds of the excavations. At the same time, it will bring out the art of hagiography and become a pole of attraction by organizing theater events, exhibitions, lectures, educational programs. In this way the audience will come close to the history of his place. Author Zogaki Athina, archaeologist

Cave of Ioannina, Peama. The Perama Cave is next to the idyllic lake, only four kilometers away from the city of Ioannina, in Perama. It was discovered accidentally in 1940, during the Second World War, and after its end, it was photographed for the first time by Konstantinos Kassikis, a gymnast and amateur speleologist. Thus, John and Anna Petrochello (founders of the Hellenic Speleological Society) learned of the cave, and began systematic exploration and mapping to become the first tourist arranged in Greece. It consists of several successive halls and corridors decorated with stalactites, stalagmites, curtains and impressive columns in marvelous clusters. In 1956 fossilized teeth and bones of the cave bear were found. It also occupies an area of 14,800 sq.m. and the tourist route is a total of 1,100 meters.
